Man of State seeks military backing
Panya Thiosangwan
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A group of former top bureaucrats and high-ranking military officers called Man of the State, or Rattha Bukkon, have sent letters to commanders of the armed forces seeking their support in the group's bid to have His Majesty the King solve the political crisis.

Letters were sent to Supreme Commander General Tanasak Patimapragorn, Army Commander General Prayuth Chan-ocha, Navy chief Admiral Narong Pipatanasai and Air Force Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong.

The letters were sent on behalf of the group's leader, former supreme commander General Saiyud Kerdphol.

In the letters, the group said the military should not take sides in politics but should perform its duty lawfully and protect the country, religion and the monarchy.

Group member Chaiwat Sinsuwong said General Saiyud was afraid the prolonged conflict may soon deteriorate to the point where people with differing opinions clash. Chaiwat said Saiyud believed the Constitutional Court and heads of the armed forces could convince His Majesty the King to intervene.

4-2-2014-3-40-00-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said he has received the letter of the Rattha Bukkon Group seeking support from the military top brass to have His Majesty the King's intervention in resolving the country's crisis.

He said he has read the letter and just acknowledged what it proposed but not yet accepted or rejected it.

He said it is just the idea of the group which does not compel others to comply with, but just propose for consideration.

However Gen Prayuth said he admired the loyalty of the group and its good intention to find a way out for the country.

He asked the people not to blame the group but should let all the Thai people to come up with their ideas and thoughts in their bid to resolve the crisis.

It was not the military to agree or disagree and act instantly but needs a process and responsible persons to check if it is possible and in compliance with the laws, he said.

But he stressed that it also needed to be acceptable and will not widen the underlying conflict.

Rattha Bukkon Group comprising former top bureaucrats and retired high ranking military officers was headed by former Supreme Commander Gen Saiyud Kerdphol.

Representing the group’s movement Monday was Chaiwat Sinsuwong.

Chaiwat on Monday handed over a letter to Air Force Commander-in-Chief Air Chief Marshal Prajin Jantong seeking the Air Force chief support for the group’s intention to seek His Majesty the King’s intervention to solve the political crisis.

BANGKOK: -- PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban today called on all people in the country to urge the acting Senate Speaker to speedily propose a new prime minister to form the new government immediately to run the country which stays without the prime minister since the dissolution of the Parliament on March 9.

He said the country’s economy is now entering a recession and any delay in having a legitimate government would only aggravate the country.

He said the current caretaker prime minister is illegitimate and has no power and authority to continue ruling the country, therefore it was necessary to have a new provisional government to keep the country running.
