Don't pay a cent.

'But your problem was reacting the way you did. You should not have opened the gate but if your ego is so testosterone-laden and sensitive, you should have been the one to say "c'mon". My bet is he wouldn't have opened the gate, and if he had, he would be the one completely in the wrong.

Handbags at 5 paces indeed.

Man up, take him a beer and bury the hatchet as others have said.

Yes, because adding alcohol to two adults who tend to threaten each other and actually act out violently is the clear way to go.

The Canadian inferiority complex is well known - they hate the fact they are ersatz Americans.

But when I lived there I found them well balanced about it - a chip on both shoulders.

I just hated they thought my accent was Irish.

If one doesn't have a sense of humour - don't live in LOS - both of you.

Yes we hate the fact that people can't understand that Canadians aren't Americans. We just share a border.
A bit tiresome listening to the constant refrain of seemingly all Canadians that "Canadia" is NOT 'murica. A nation that defines itself solely by what it is not, especially in contrast to an odious neighbor, has more problems than differentiating itself. Can we please have some minimal indication of what that stultifying place IS rather than just what it is not? Perhaps something about the blissful coexistence of east and west in Hongcouver? Or the pleasant relationship between Quebec and Ottawa? Or maybe the exponentially higher IQs of the inbred citizens of Halifax as compared with Hobart? Edited by BanTamo

I am happy that you are not living somewhere near me.

Spraying someone with water bah.gif

When he complains putting him down bah.gif

And than someone asks why Farangs have such a bad reputation in Thailand.

Spraying water at someone is already something no normal man gets in his mind. But everyone with honor would apologize later, not get violent.

Yeah, Canada - Australia 1:0 tomato2.gifaggressive.gif

and hear, hear, the "Peace Loving, Not Confronting German style" lol times change rolleyes.gif

I think WWI started like this when someone playfully sprayed water on the

archduke Franz Ferdinand... and the rest is history...

Water? No, first bombs, than bullets! I think you missed some hours in history.whistling.gif

Anyway your joke about a assassination of a couple who had 3 small children who got orphaned, is against my taste.blink.png

man wants to fight,he gets to fight..where is the problem..when you see him again, smile, open the gate, step back and ask if he wants to go again..you will know where you stand then.. but the big dog does not run home after a fight.nor does he offer a drink.he strolls around to send the message he won and is now the boss...loser must fight again or submit.if this guy is crazy and planning something for your future you are better off knowing.....as for the nationality difference,,crazy old men come from all over the world, they do seem to collect here though.i have read the posts on T.V. and half of them ,,us,,you,,are surely a bit touched.

Every so often I read a post that is so outrageous, I believe that the Thai Visa staff makes up a story simply to get responses. This is one of the posts.

Do what your Thai wife says or you will have issues with her too.

If the injured doesn't want to see you then write a letter to him apologising for the prank that was a simple misunderstanding that got out of hand. I bet it was really hot outside too, wasn't it. That's why the Thai have a saying"Jai yen yen" in a situation like that.

From your storey however, if you already had a run in with the guy why would you taunt him further? I'd move away to another village. Didn't you know that Ausi's and Canuks don't mix well?

Its almost a shame the OP didn't hit him with the water in the initial incident.

Hearing aid knocked out, wouldn't have heard the OP's retort and wouldn't have said "c'mon then" and ended on the ground, then hospital.

Life can be cruel at times, eh...................tongue.png.pagespeed.ce.JwCxzAWj6x.png width=20 alt=tongue.png>

OP, don't take it to heart, and forget about going back to Canada over something like this...................wink.png.pagespeed.ce.HJgPQ3U3SA.png

A very stupid and ignorant post.

As a hearing aid user since more than 25 years I can tell you that one of the biggest fears is that someone puts water over you, resulting in the malfunction of the hearing aid, has to be repaired and some parts will have to be exchanged. On top of that the hearing aid could be away for repair during a week or ten days, leaving someone, who needs the hearing aid, not able to communicate, watch tv, hear traffic and so on.

Did you know, clever guy, that a hearing aid can cost over 100K baht? No of course not, you thought you buy in 7/11 for 200 baht, right?

Think next time you post, if nothing interesting comes up, just don't post.

To the OP: you're at fault, as much as can be. You had a "trivial" (for you) incident before, then you spray him with water. Even if you missed, the guy has been scared to get water in his expensive hearing aid, so he exploded, logical, you don't spray a guy with water, a guy you have had a minor misunderstanding with, as it could easily be seen more aggressive than you refuse to admit. Your opening the gate after threatening him made the thing aggressive on your side, as he stood outside the gate, so did not come on your property.

Your wife is the clever one here, keeping the peace in the neighbourhood after your attack is a major thing in Thailand. If you don't understand that it's time to go back to Canada.

My post was actually written to try to lighten the mood of the thread a bit, it was not serious. Thought I'd better put that in for clarity, there were enough hints with the emocicons and in the writing I thought.

Hope you're not Australian and writing this from a hospital bed, that would make me feel bad........................sad.png

Being an Australian, my first thought was that your neighbour is being a <deleted>. However you state: "I was a little perturbed by now as he had threatened me before in a similar manner for something so trivial that I have forgotten." Most likely, you are being a <deleted> too. If you have done things in the past that you have thought trivial, maybe you have to start thinking about the implications of things and the view of others before you do it because it isn't trivial to them?

The way to solve the situation, is to grab a slab of beer, tell your neighbour that you want to work it out over a beer (an Aussie will love this idea) sit down, get pissed together, you apologise (and mean it) and tell him that you won't do anything again that may upset him.

Also, tell your wife to stay out of it because she is disrespecting you. Tell her you will both work it out man to man. By the way, with him being an Aussie, sprinkle your conversation with the word 'mate' many times. However, remember Aussies can also take the word 'mate' both in a good and bad way. Depends on how it is said.

Has your wife struck a deal with this cantankerous old coot? She could be a tad more supportive.

Do not pay him hire someone yourself

If it happened out in the public road, you are guilty, and may be charged with assault.

If it happened in your garden, you have the right to kill him and get away with it.

In most countries of the world, throwing water at someone would be considered common assault (if it hit them, the more serious crime aggravated assault).

From what you have said, you appear to have admitted guilt all the way along, my advice, pay up or run.

By the way, never try this foolishness on a Thai man, he would likely pull a gun, shoot you dead, and get away with it (on either occasion according to your statements).

I believe incident took place at OP's gate, ie driveway , ie not a public road.

Splashing water does not fall under the assault, wish you luck having this so called assault stick.

You are Thai , so you saying all Thai men carry guns and have brain less than a monkey to shoot someone at their property to then spend good part of their life in jail?

Inside or outside, it makes a big difference.

Under US, UK and Thai law, acting in such a way as to cause a person reasonable fear for their safety is assault.

In Thailand and the US, we all have guns, usually in our pockets, belly bags or car box.

Don't know what country you come from, so can only say, you aren't there now, in Thailand Thai law applies.

canucks vs aussies. Which farangs are more liked?

We should all gather around at the OP's place when the old guy gets out of hospital, we should dress like Vikings, divide into two teams and then get I to it. The team with the last man standing is the winner.

I always try to use any excuse I can to break out my leather ware .

This man is a sad and angry man who seems to "enjoy" anger and conflict. If you like Thailand and love your wife, it would be ridiculous to destroy your happiness for this person who goaded you. He has the upper hand as he is controlling your present anger and future life. I'd do the right thing by giving whatever your wife wants. Everyone around knows who he is and will admire your more buddhist approach. If he brings it as far as the court you can reassess. It just seems silly to let him control you. Good luck with a testing situation. P.S. Spraying a friend with water, on a hot day, is a sign of friendly play.

My friends and I play subtle pranks on each other perpetually (eg, a quick 'accidental' squirt with the hose), sometimes have to remind myself that comfort level doesn't exist with folks I don't know so well. So be it. You learn.

But if the story represented is factual, him threatening to put you on your ass changed the tenor of the exchange significantly - I would probably rather claw out my eyes with a spork rather than pay off someone who threatened me under those circumstances. It's definitely a red flag to get that kind of threat.

My input - knowing only this part of the story - is don't pay anything but don't do anything else to increase hostility either. Consider it a lesson on human behavior and give him wide berth.

Your friends ..ok. neighbor walking down the street

As you are the one that injured him, you are at fault in Thailand regardless who started it. So you should pay his medical bills.

Additionally you should go to the hospital and apologize and finalize the issue once and for all, be humble and save your face.

This is how it works in Thailand, you are not in Canada now and trying to apply Canadian law here will only make more trouble for you.

Two kids playing????

A little overreacting on both sides. I think spraying water in his direction was childish, but so is his reaction.

Grab a bottle of booze, head over, and behave like adults.

Oh sugar!!!

A little playful water fun ...

I can understand his concern about his hearing aid ... but ... this is over reaction ...

Normally I would suggest ... buy a slab (packet) of beer (VB if he is from Victoria, Fosters if from New South Wales, XXXX if from Queensland, Swan if from Western Australia, and I have no idea what the rest of Australia drinks ... and I am not a beer drinker myself ... prefer a good chardy ... ) .... and offer apologies ....

He seems to be a rather angry old man ... certainly not the fun loving type that most of us Aussies are ....

My Take:

Only one side of the incident has been described here, so, does the OP have credibility?

He mentions previous antagonism between the pair, but has conveniently forgotten the details. Who initiated that? What happened? Possibly the other guy was having little to do with the Canadian because of that incident and would not be amused by suddenly being confronted by playful water fights.

The OP claims the water missed by 10 feet. Yeh right. It was close enough to have the victim concerned about his hearing aid. A miss by 10 foot is watering the garden, not spraying at a person.

I don't know the relevant ages of the pair, perhaps it was said and I missed it, but it seems the Australian is older. Maybe he is a grumpy old bastard, plenty of us here in Thailand. Always best not to antagonise such people, just ignore.

After a few ass words were exchanged between the pair the OP clearly escalated the situation by opening his gate and moving towards the other party on the sidewalk. The other party grabbed the OPs arms (to stop a punch?), and was then deposited on his aforementioned ass. The way this fight began and ended also suggests a significant age difference.

The OP then states his opponent wasn't hurt although the ambulance staff, the doctors in the hospital (how long was he a patient?), and even his own wife who visited have a different opinion. Tho Op whines about some cuts and scratches on his arms to try and convince people he was also injured. Yeh right.

My conclusion is the OP is an ass. He caused the problem, escalated it, probably injured the other party and should listen to his wife, or piss off back to Canada.

As a side note: all the dicks who tried to turn this thread into bigotry about various nationalities are to be despised.

Agreed about one side of the story.

Can't I be allowed for a bigotry comment about my own people, for crying out loud? It seems I might of got a bit without even casting a line. ;)

We need some more information from the OP, perhaps some photographs and perhaps the bib could arrange a video re enactment of the incident.

Like two children. You are an adult und you were the first showing disrespect with your actions.

I guess, you always felt, you're better and more intelligent than the other guy. Otherwise you wouldn't have done it in the first place.

Indeed, if you need to start a conversation by shooting a stream of water at me I'd likely want to crush your trachea as well-that is me. He11, I haven't even met you and I already suspect ppl feel inclined to share that experience with you. Shooting a stream of water at an adult male in 2014 is inviting trouble- period! You find it such fun that you need to scream "FUN," then your equally a bonehead. 50% of the participants in this story do not think it's fun, in this case- and me- that makes it not "FUN," clown!

"...attempt to have ANY FUN..." Grow up, child!
