True told me the internet line for my apartment is 'full', what can I do?

Hi,

I recently moved to Bangkok and now I'm on the hunt to buy private internet for my room. I've been told that getting fiber internet on the 9th floor is impossible, and True have told me that the line for my area is full so I can't get ADSL either.

Is there anything that I can do to get internet to my room that doesn't cost a crazy amount of money? I've been searching on Google, however I haven't found anything yet.

Having unlimited bandwidth would be fairly important for me as well, should that be possible.

I live near Victory Monument, should that make any difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Can you receive any of the major WiFi Hotspots from inside your room (or close to a window)?

  • 3BB
  • AIS
  • True
  • DTAC

Many, like 3BB, have Unlimited WiFi.

I purchased a USB WiFi Stick with an antenna and used a couple of long USB extension cables to get it outside where it could receive the 3BB signal. Had a 10Mbps connection that cost only 99฿/mo. Did that for about 6 months, then moved to an area without coverage.

There are many other options, like setting up a point-to-point private wireless connection, but logistically if you are not a long-term owner who can make deals with people who are in line-of-site of your building who can get FTTx, Cable Broadband, or aDSL, then it isn't really feasible.

If all else fails, there's TOT's Wi-Net and AIS's Airnet, which are essentially long-range wifi, with unlimited GB plans from a few hundred Baht/mth.

Yes, as some people noted, try a 3G USB aircard. The DTAC internet plans are the better deal it seems. From 200 to 600 bht /month. And it doubles as phone SIM and can take it anywhere in the backwoods of Thailand.

Those wifi hotspots by all the providers, although cheap, are notorious for their instability. You can get them on one side of the building but not the other for example. I remember I had trouble connecting to one from True, a few meters away from True Tower.

edit: those USB aircards are not cheap, 900-1500 baht, but try to find a used one online or Fortune Town or Pantip.

Maybe best to talk with neighbors to see what is available. Many buildings/developments have exclusive arrangements with ISPs re: DSL, FTTx, DOCSIS. A 9th flor location should not preclude Fiber as an option, although any fiber might be terminated in the basement and then copper used for the riser to your room.

What telephony and TV services are available in your building? Do you have a telephone in your room? Does it have its own number?

Assume you can satisfy any residency/contractual requirements?

Also talk with the building management, rather than contacting True directly on your own; I think you are being fed an excuse re: no capacity just to get rid of you.

And as mentioned check with AIS AirNET, 3BB wireless broadband, TOT Wi-NET; these are all 2.4/5.0 GHz point-to-point wireless services.

And then, as mentioned check for public, paid WiFi: True WiFI and 3BB have the largest footprints but your 9th floor location might preclude those?
