Police, troops join hands to set up checkpoints at rally sites
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police, troops and guards for the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will work together to set up checkpoints around the PDRC rally site to provide safety for protesters.

The move comes in the wake of a deadly attack on Thursday, which killed three protesters and injured many others.

Deputy Metropolitan Commissioner Pol Maj-General Chantawit Ramasutra said yesterday the checkpoints, which will be about 100 metres from the rally site, were designed to prevent more attacks and the smuggling of weapons into the area.

The new checkpoint structure follows discussion on safety plans between the police and PDRC representatives. The PDRC has not previously allowed police to join the checkpoints or enter its rally sites.

In the early hours of Thursday, several M79 grenades were fired at protesters sleeping at Democracy Monument, on the outer edge of the rally. The main stage is now at Rajdamnoen Nok near the United Nations headquarters.

Chantawit said police would boost the number of checkpoints near the rally site from 10 to about 20, with 34 more around Bangkok. Rapid response teams would also be added with mobile units working around the clock. These new moves have been applied since Thursday night.

A CAPO spokeswoman, meanwhile, condemned the attack, saying the agency feared it would lead to further violence in the capital. She called on the public to avoid joining rallies, saying it was highly likely there would be more violence.

"She called on the public to avoid joining rallies, saying it was highly likely there would be more violence."

Speaking on behalf of Chalerm? Another prediction?

Why round the clock security now after many victims murdered and wounded?

The best security is rounding up Chalerm and Jatuporn and the lot and jail them while awaiting trials. Then revoke the diplomatic passport of the missunderstood fugitive, ask interpol to arrest him and bring him to justice. Chase him to hell if necessary.

Answer: The PDRC has not previously allowed police to join the checkpoints or enter its rally sites.

Now the PDRC and Police have joined forces it may be a little safer. Hopefully the police will be a little more peaceful than the violent gaurds and people won't get beaten to an inch of death if they accidently bump a cone.

Checkpoints OUTSIDE the rallysides have always been possible. Chalerm before stated he would protect the redshirt protestors who were not targeted with bullets and grenades untill 10 pm. The PDRC protestors were thugs only (as you and others in TV agree with). They needed/deserved no protection.

We are talking of MURDERING people here. Any government has the duty to try to prevent that. The politicalisation of safety for the Thai people is SICKENING.

Jatuporn threatening to burn Bangkok is still a free man. Says enough.

This could be interesting if checkpoints are manned by police and military personnel operating under different orders depending on who their bosses support.

You appear to have forgotten the shining white knight Prayuth and his 176 army checkpoints brimming with soldiers. Didn't stop the attacks, did they?

suthep who presided over the death of 96 people and wanted on murder, sedition arrest warrants is still a free man. That says more, if only you could see that.

I think it's EQUALLY telling that Jatuporn had the lese majeste charges mysteriously dropped by his buddies in the DSI yet is still walking around a free man on TERRORISM charges.

this is a repeat thread.

I said on the one last night that this will curtail PDRC ability to move guns and their Naval personel in and out.

Police with the Army on hand are there to "Protect" Suthep now. smile.png so all the extra car checks and searches to "Protect" Suthep is going to really annoy him.

If every car and person is photo'd and registered in the area, soom of PDRC troops are going to have to leg it or be exposed.

Nice move and am glad the PDRC are receiving some protection... read, 'Being corralled" at last

now they are safe inside, no need for all that "visiting" is there.

Or, at the very least, they will be beaten in compliance with the law.

Alternatively, there's the folded notes options, familiar to many a Bangkok driver.

Maybe not a bad experiment in cooperation and reconciliation.

Night shifts tend to bring people together, in my experience.

Please clarify one thing: How does a policeman provide protection to a group, many of whom have arrest warrants against them? Only in Thailand!!!

The attacks were curtailed, they didn't stop completely. Why don't you also ask why the CAPO and the police have been completely ineffectual in that regard? Because at least with the army they did manage to catch a group of Red Shirts after they bombed the NACC on March 28.

Any comments on this?

A start but not nearly enough.

As I have written before there needs to be a combined army-police peacekeeping force put together, the police brass wont like it but will come round.

Then Suthep can be brought in, given bail with harsh conditions that confine him to the south, also a few other key leaders like the monk who will go back to his temple.

Jatuporn can have his bail withdrawn along with his mate Nuttawwat and others, The retired general who is training the red army can be given some options !, Isaan Rambo can be given a quiet talk.

A delegation can meet with Thaksin to explain a few home truths to him.

Everyone on both sides will go home and serious talk can begin to get the country back on track.
