Dusit Poll: People wish the EC would quickly hold the general election

BANGKOK, 19 May 2014 (NNT) – Thai people have a great concern over the current state of the politics and wish the Election Commission (EC) would quickly hold the general election, according to a recent survey by Dusit Poll.

The survey, taken during May 12th-17th, reflects the opinions of 1,486 participants on the current political upheaval. About 61% of the poll takers propose that the military come out and show their stance to protect the public and the nation.

More than 54% urge the courts to be impartial, while 40.70% want the EC to urgently organize a general election with transparency and neutrality.

About 55% of the respondents implore the Senate to perform its duty with fairness and uphold the benefit of the public. The survey showed 42.40% of the respondents want independent public agencies to truly be independent and neutral.

Approximately 60% think that the Royal Thai Police must be able to maintain peace and order for the public, while 52.10% say both the People’s Democratic Reform Committee and the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship must refrain from provoking one another and arousing the public to join their gathering.

We all know that elections are evil. Surely they must have been paid by Thaksin to answer this poll!

I've got an inkling that withing the 61% who want the military to protect the nation, there are very, very different opinions about who they should protect it against. Likewise for those who want the courts to be impartial.

Still it's very disheartening that people would sooner turn to the military rather than democratic process.

What on earth does this mean? "About 61% of the poll takers propose that the military come out and show their stance to protect the public and the nation." Martial Law? Coup?

Does "More than 54% urge the courts to be impartial" mean that 46% weant them to take sides?

Does "40.70% want the EC to urgently organize a general election with transparency and neutrality." mean that 60% don't care? Or don't need neutrality?

Poorly worded poll, poorly worded article.

The EC's delaying tactic is clearly becoming more evident and has ruined the institutions neutrality. They are betraying the trust bestowed on them by the state. If the Dusit Poll is to be trusted, then the EC should heed the people's will.

The actual poll has been turned upside down to make this headline.

It is a lie -headline and misleading, only 40% polled this, 60% didn't.

RE-CAP 60% said do NOT hold a quick election. only 40% said it should.

Is there a name of who selected the headline ???? why use the topic if it was misleading posters.???

What a bizarre notion in this new age of Elite power grabs. Don't they know that opinions only count if they are dictated from the PDRC stage.

Wonder if the Miss thailand Universe execution squad is on the trail of the evil pollsters

Asking the public what they think. Whatever next.

When the poll results does not support you, you go up in arms about the results. I too have my doubts about these polls - which is why I said "IF THE DUSIT POLL IS TO BE TRUSTED".

Clearly, you do not trust these polls. So let's have an election then! Or you just playing chicken?

Many Thais don't know what they want....they just want problems to go away and if some political group keeps saying, "Early elections will solve the problem" then that's what many Thais will think. Of course early elections won't solve anything unless the core problems are solved and that ain't going to happen soon.

No worries, how about the EC hold a mini audit inspection of the governments accounts before the elections, with a private accountant firm overseeing the transparency , that way the good people of Thailand will know that the PTP have been good financial managers coffee1.gif

What's next? Well, if the poll is to be believed only 42% of respondents want really independent and neutral public agencies. Add to that the 40% who want quick elections and you have a true majority of Thai who want the current Pheu Thai led shilghtly reduced government to continue.

You seem confused, or perhaps the person writing the headline and article are confused or unable to communicate clearly.

The previous poster made a very valid point that the headline contradicted the reported poll results. What he missed noticing is that the headline is indeed accurate if misleading. People do wish the EC would quickly hold the general election. The headline would be true if even two people responded in the affirmative.

Misleading because it would seem that 61% favour the military stepping in (and conversely 60% don't favour a quick election).

My opinion on the election question in the poll isn't that 60% don't want an election, it's that 60% want an election and don't see a quick one giving any positive result for the country (or possibly not succeeding). The original question is crucial to understanding the results, and of course we will never see that, certainly not an accurate translation of the question.

Lets turn it around as most of your posts seem to be pro gov ready answers (similar to Yinglucks when she was questioned)

What do you feel about the poll, because your clan on here seem to give the impression that a quick poll is what people want. So although I do not like how it was headlined, the fact was it was NOT a landslide in favour of quick election.

Elections are only evil by for the Dems..cause they lose all the time.

The EC should immediately hold the elections and not be intimidated by the PDRC.

PDRC is simply a bunch of thugs holding the country hostage from executing the democratic process.

Candidates should be voted on based on their political positions regarding reform, just like any othe nation would do things.

Why are the Dems afraid..to allow the candidates to publicly voice their opinions/positoins on reform..and then let the people vote?

Hello, near newbie. Your in fine fettle I see.

Elections are held to vote in a government hopefully to govern democratically, so I have to ask you was this the case-re. PTP ???

If the said government broke the law, they should be thrown out. NOT give a chance to get elected again.

All the MPs that were guilty during this parliament, should be tried in a court of law. New reforms to then take place to stop once and for all the corrupt practices.

No MPs with any dubious record to be allowed to be put up for office. Election violators to be fined/banned/ jailed.

This then has paved the way for a FAIR election. NOW is the worst time to hold an election. no one will win.

Love these polls . . .

40.70% want the EC to urgently organize a general election with transparency and neutrality

So 59.30% done want urgent elections?

Oh please don't take these Thai surveys as a zero sum game.

2+2 does not have equal 4.

I presume in this silly survey they also asked if the wanted to have an election slowly.

Another one who can't spot sarcasm.

I know the polls are shit, the questions are stupidly phrased and the results dubious at best.
