triffid Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Is there any noticeable nuisance being caused by the martial law to drivers around Isan? Had planned to drive around for a fortnight, mostly in upper Isan (Udon, Sakon Nakhon, Loei, Korat) and am wondering whether to postpone that for a while.
KhunBENQ Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Yesterday drove from Chum Phae (central Khon Kaen province) to Udon Thani and moved in the city. Absolutely no trace of any military checkpoints or the like. Just the usual police check for bike helmets. Only nuisance were my fellow Thai drivers
khwaibah Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 This has just broke on TV. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/728152-thai-unrest-shuts-unofficial-border-crossings-cambodia/ I'm in Kap Choeng just up from the Chong Chom Border Crossing, were on highway 214. What is very noticeable is the down turn of commercial trucks going and coming from Cambodia and the down turn of buses going and coming from Surin to the crossing. Talking with others they are seeing the same.
KhunBENQ Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 But very isolated event at this border. Have not heard from others fellows or from reports that there is any problem outside greater Bangkok (where military blocks traffic at certains spots).
GinBoy2 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Ditto to everything above. I've come across nothing outside the usual police checkpoints in Chaiyaphum/Khon Kaen. Doesn't surprise me though, even during the 2010 fracas, for the majority of us outside of Bangkok, and the rabid posters of the TVF "Outraged Old Men' brigade, life just plods along pretty much as usual.
tso310 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 drove from Phrakhon Chai to Bangkok today in a pick driven by step son. The route was Nang Rong down to Wattana Nakhon can't remeber the road number. \Done it loads of times. Anyhow stopped many times at checkpoints. Police manned checkpoints but heavily armed troops were always present. Always got a pleasant salute from the soldiers. More of an inconvenience than anything. Got into Bangkok at about 17:00 and heard about the coup on the hotels NHK news. Most of the checkpoints were before Wattna Nakhon btw. Must have been hell in fulll military gear for those poor guys as it was scorching.
