It Is Not Hard To Imagine Internet Being Blocked Next

Featured Replies

I hope so.

Every prat TEFLer with a Twitter or Facebook account seems to have become a political analyst or a foreign correspondent over the past few days. I've not half read some crap being bandied around the social media networks.

Hospitals use the INTERNET people would die. Banks use the INTERNET and people would have no money and die.

Airplanes use the INTERNET people would die. Boats use the INTERNET people would die. The stock market uses the INTERNET rich people would get poor and die.

Sure but does the good general know this,or even care,he is absolute ruler of this country,i would not be surprised if he did, imagine the suicide rate among falangs would soar,tv members not able to post, what would most of them do all day?

That is a very very honest post about yourself. My compliments.

Good job Thais dont spend all day on "t'internet" loooking at facebook then or theyll be dead too

It wouldn't be a case of them not being able to do it, it would be the effect if they did.

Sure, they can close down the ISPs, they can tell CAT to close the international cables, they can even stop the mobile network relay stations.

But, given a few days, in this digital/internet related world that we live in, all companies that relies on email, banks, hospitals, electrical distribution, water supply, etc would be affected. The list is vast.

It is not just a simple case of blanking news channels, but in that respect they could reduce viewing capability but still leave proxy access available to those that know how to use it.

I just quickly browsed through the thread, so maybe it has been clarified yet.

1) Satellites

Totally irrelevant for mass internet traffic. Very small amount of traffic goes through satellites today.

Satellite is for TV e.g.

2) "Cut"

Quite naive ideas here.

99.xxxxx % of all Thai internet traffic goes through a handful underwater fibre optical cables and one or two terrestrial cables to Singapore.

All traffic is concentrated and controlled at CAT Bangkok.

All traffic goes through the censorship/blocking filter.

To stop all traffic you do not even have to pull the plug there.

A few commands at the admin terminal will stop the show.

Pulling the plug was one of the main concerns during the sabotage time.

CAT has been occupied also and the chaots could very well have stopped the Thai internet by sabotage.

In fact, very expensive connections via satellite (Inmarsat?) would be the last resort in this situation.

Yep, Thailand it is estimated to block 10s of thousands of websites but still allowing VPN connections that allow you to bypass.

This could very well change too,

Then we come close to have a Chinese situation.

Total shutdown: could cause immense financial damage for Thailand. The general promised not to hinder business.

Lets hope he keeps his promises.
