Popular Post pbeieio
Why should we stay in a country where we, westerners are not welcome by the Thai government. A Thai, in Europe! if sufficiently funded can buy anything from a caravan to a football club, This is not reciprocated here. I want the same "rights" as a Thai property owner in London. I am sick of the overt racism that is endemic here! I am sick of the term "farang" used in this forum. It is just a racist slur! Anybody who uses the term upon themselves is self deprecating or a Thai I want to invest here, create wealth and employment . But there is a problem! I am not American or Japanese! I do not get their limited r privileges? Again. I ask you,! Why should we stay? Vote with your wallet! It is the only language they understand
Popular Post chiang mai
Because it's our home and "we" like it here. Plus "we" don't object to being called farang and "we" accept that "we" can't own land, "we" knew that before "we" came here. You don't have to stay if you don't like the rules.
Popular Post Robby nz
I will stay because I like it here and because I am willing to obey the law of any country I happen to be in. If Farang upsets your delicate sensibilities then you will have to be careful where you go for in many places you can be called much worse. Good by and good luck.
Popular Post David48
I actually quite like it here, but I can understand your issues, just that I don't share them. Mind you, it would be nice if the land ownership laws were changed to allow a modest domestic holding. I'm OK with the Falang term, as it's only a descriptor, rather then a racial slur. It's certainly a polarising comment here. It was fun watching the Father-in-Law go from 'you', to 'Somchai', to ''Davis' to 'David Bekham' (when he was in a playfull mood) to 'Khun Da' ... I'm Family now ... There is a system of duel pricing ... sure. But that is more based on the Thai's ability to make a judgement on whether you can pay more, or not. They would try it on with a wealthy Thai. When ever my car gets repaired, the Father-in-Law keeps me out of sight so the price isn't inflated. Do I get ripped by her old man? ... nope. I got the car washed, oil and oil filter changed for Bt 900 and the old filter shown as proof. Comes down to trust and getting the respect of the immediate Thai Family, that's how I've overcome many of the issues you espouse in the OP. 'Why should we stay?', because the frustrations you feel here are, on balance, less then the other viable alternatives ... though I do understand your frustrations. .
Popular Post NeverSure
You say "we." Are you married? To a Westerner? Actually I agree with you and I'm an American you mentioned. Why would I invest a satang where there's no rule of law? I suspect the Japanese are getting tired of it themselves, from things they've said. Many single Westerners seem very happy to live in Thailand. Some for the weather, some for the cost of living, some for the availability of women, and others just like it. I prefer to live in America in an area with great weather and visit Thailand once a year. When I get tired of it I step onto and airplane and go home. Yes, Home. Many here are going to beat up on you but to each his own. PS Farang isn't an insult or racist if said in a normal tone of voice with no negative gestures. It's only the word that Thais have to describe a white Westerner. Would you prefer another term such as "ain't Asian?"
Popular Post neverdie
Try being a Thai and getting into some of the western countries. As for 'owning land' issues, I believe the Thais have it right. Foreign ownership of land, especially in a country as small as Thailand is NOT a good thing. Perfect example would be Australia. They have allowed foreign investment to swoop in and make large land purchases and that country has significant problems with the cost of housing, locals have been well and truely priced out of the market by wealth foreign investors. I'm not complaining though as I am a land owner that made serious profit by selling land for multiple amounts of what it was really worth, so three cheers to me Please leave Thailand and take your miserable money with you, it won't be noticed.

I probably stay longer in Thailand then you do, indeed in recent years I live there more then my home country (not the USA). It's nice to have options. .

Popular Post NoThainess4U
the OP is realizing for himself, what I also concluded months ago. he is wise to leave before things get worse for him, and they can indeed get worse, kicking him on his way out the door, is part of that unwelcome feeling he has, as, the willingness of members to do that to him, is precisely the example of Thainess, that you all have absorbed, it is not ok, to treat people this way, the fact that you all enjoy it, is pathetic OP, get your money out of Thai banks while you can, there are a host of unknowns about to hit Thailand, do not get caught in the sweeps
Popular Post chiang mai
The OP describes two main issues, racism and land ownership, I ask you, which country is more racist, Thailand or the UK? Despite all the legislation in the world the UK wins that title in my book. As for land ownership: it's always been that way, it's not a secret that a person suddenly finds out about and it's definitely nothing new. The earlier poster who suggests that Thailand has got it right on this point is absolutely correct. So I wonder if the OP is actually describing the real problem that making him feel so concerned about his chance of success in Thailand and wealth creation here, is there perhaps another question that has something to do with penetrating Thai society/culture and understanding it all?
krisb
I only started to go to Thailand cause it's a cheap as chips holiday from Australia, and only 8 hours away from my front door. If Europe was as close or as cheap, I would go there. Now I'm married to a Thai, with our child, it almost certainly forever ties me to the country. Don't worry about the word falang, they get called much much worse here in Aus. The country is very small, there's not enough land for 70million Thais, plus outsiders who want to own some also. Buy a condo. I thought you could start a business in Thailand?...maybe I'm wrong. Anyhow, I see much worse happening in Thailand that you don't mention. Corruption is one.

I assume you have the same financial affluence as an average Thai property owner in London then ? If you do one suspects you can "acquire" those rights you seek in Thailand... I want to invest here, create wealth and employment . Working on line dear boy to support your lifestyle in Thailand is most likely not same concept the Thai authorities have in mind regarding investing, creating wealth and employment... However I do note in your little rant that there was no mention of discriminatory visa polices and "its just not fair", I am a white westerner, the natives cannot treat me this way...!!!! In review of your remarks, I have come to a conclusion and will pose this question ? How much did she get you for ?
