FAO predicts Thailand could export more rice

BANGKOK, June 10 -- The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has predicted that world rice production would slightly rise this year due to higher demand, prompting Thailand to export more rice in the second half of this year.

Thailand's Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) secretary-general Anan Lila said that FAO has forecast total world rice production for 2014/2015 at some 501.1 million tonnes, an increase of 0.8 per cent from the previous year, as the main rice producers of China, India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam would be able to produce more rice.

Thailand, meanwhile, would see lower rice production from the out-of-season rice, due to severe drought.

However, as the world rice price lowers, demand for rice will rise, prompting the world rice market to sell around 39.3 million tonnes worth of rice this year, an increase from last year's 37.2 million tonnes, a rise of about 5 per cent.

Pulling up world rice stocks from 174.8 million tonnes to 180.9 million tonnes, this would signify that the world food stability index has also risen from 35.7 to 36.0 for 2013/2014. FAO said that most of the rice would be from Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam, while Indian and United States's stocks might see a decline.

FAO forecasts that the world market demand for rice will pave the way for Thailand to export more rice in the latter half of this year and could help push Thailand into becoming the world's number one rice exporter once again. (MCOT online news)

"Felix had gone to live in a lotus land of his imagination. Where what is desired is dreamed of as already happened, where obstacles dissolve under the weight of desire, and where reality has vanished entirely.”

Iain Pears, The Dream of Scipio

Felix clearly also works in the OAE.

Also with the laws of many countries outlawing the giving of bribes it is probable with the changes of the last few weeks may well see many more companies willing to deal with Thailand.

They need to cut their losses and sell the old stock otherwise its going to be valueless.

There is a rise in production, that makes the price lower, but it won't mean more will be bought.

This is a completely stupid foresight that will not happen. There is always the same demand for rice.

The global demand would need to rise by about 90% to make any difference in Thailand's massive stockpile. The WTO would never allow Thailand to push that lot onto the global market along with the 10 million tonnes they are about to harvest in the coming months..... It would crash the price so badly across all the rice producing countries that ALL the world's rice farmers will face severe poverty.

Dream on boys.... Thaksin has not only caused the loss of over half a trillion baht he also has really <deleted> up your industry and is completely irreparable. His megalomaniacle insanity has even took money out of the pockets of farmers worldwide.

I am getting to the point where I don't want the junta to leave, and return back to 'so called' democracy... That is when Thailand will start sliding back into the shit*er.... Politicians in Thailand means one thing.... PROBLEMS.

Not sure I agree about the bit on the WTO not allowing it, they don't seem to effect drastic sanctions in this area. Would Thailand be prepared to do so and become the cheap Charlie of global rice? not sure on that one.

According to the good people of the north east of Thailand Thaksin is a good man as he took from the rich and gave to the poor! they believe it so much that quite a few of them have been getting dressed up and protesting about it for quite some time to keep his Sister in power as the PM.

Thankfully the Junta has put a stop to that nasty propaganda.
