24 Y/o American - Looking To Come For 2 1/2 Years Of College (desire To Buy Condo And Work Part Time)

In the next 6-8 moths, I am hoping to be able to move to bangkok. I will be selling my house in the U.S. and be arriving with (wire transfer) 1-1.3mil baht and would like to buy a condo. As I'm hoping to attend no less than 2-3 years of undergraduate school at Bangkok University, is it possible, by taking summer classes as well, to stay in Thailand for at least the 2-3 years.

I have no doubt in my ability to be accepted at the University, since I will be transfering (hopefully) some credits from my previous college, where I held a 3.75 gpa.

I did a search on student visa, but it didn't exactly cover the information I'm looking for.

I appreciate anything you can share.

I'm hoping to be able to fall back on my fitness background while living in Bangkok.

Thanks again

I've been reading on here for about the last 4 hours, and I must say.... Sunbelt, you are truly an asset to this board.

1.) As I'm hoping to be there for numerous years for schooling/culture/travel, does it seem wise that I purchase instead of rent?

2.) Will the Thai government allow me to work for the entire time I'm there studying.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply. If you need a personal trainer early next year, I owe you one :o

..........to attend no less than 2-3 years of undergraduate school at Bangkok University..........

I assume you are fluent in written and spoken Thai!! :o

Is one of your parents Thai?

Does this mean you could obtain a Thai passport?

That would make the whole exercise much easier.

lol, of course not.

All classes are taught in english, and my international travels have taught me that I normally pick up langauges quickly. (I've been to 12 countries, and lived in 4)

I hope to focus primarily on my studies, and allow my interactions with the culture to teach me to at least speak Thai.

It is not necessary to know the Thai language at all to study in an international program here. It will help you, but not necessary. You will probably just learn Thai through interaction with the Thai students there. You can also take Thai language classes there. As for buying a condo; I would hold off. Wait until you have lived and studied here awhile before you jump into that. You might realise that it's not for you after a year and then you'd be stuck with the condo. Rent for awhile first.

And don't rush that wire transfer. There are specific procedures for wiring money to buy a condo. If you don't follow them, you could be here with your money and unable to buy the condo :D .

I really appreciate the response.

Last night I spent a great deal of time looking at both apartments and condo both for rent and purchase, but the BU website doesn't have beans for information regarding where it's located. If anyone could let me know the areas closest to to the university for my apartment hunting, that would be great. The closer the better. (care to do business suncoast? :D)

The nearest BTS stop to the school is Phra Khanong. There is a website here, www.mrroomfinder.com that has lots of places in that area I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies.

I've been researching apartments near 'Phra Khanong', and it's not seeming to be a good way to search. Are there any other 'suburb' names that would make it easier to search?

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for your kind comments.

1.) As I'm hoping to be there for numerous years for schooling/culture/travel, does it seem wise that I purchase instead of rent?

If you have the funds, yes better to buy. Check out our property division at www.property.th.com. Feel free to e-mail the Director of real estatre at [email protected] roland will be happy to have one of his staff in the department to help you find a condo near the school.

2.) Will the Thai government allow me to work for the entire time I'm there studying.

Yes as long as you have a work permit. Many lawyers will state you cannot apply for work permit with a educational visa. But they are wrong. We have process easily over 100 work permits with a educational visa.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply. If you need a personal trainer early next year, I owe you one

May take you up on the personal trainer. Thanks for the offer. :o

By the way, how is it going with the housing mkt in the States? Seems a tad soft right now in the South.

Thank you for all the information!

I'll keep your contact information in my records.

The housing market is in sad shape in many places throughout the midwest (florida as well so I've heard). I've always had a nack for finance, and was even asked to teach an interterm finance course at my previous university, so I keep a close eye on many domestic markets. I currently live in the far northern, midwest of the U.S. and it's truly a buyers market.

I've received a job offer near miami, which I will likely decline because of the cost of living there, despite the market being saturated with vacant space. As I'm looking to sell my own house, I can only pray that the market will improve soon.

The more I research, the more appealing Malaysia becomes. Seeing as I'm not into prostitutes, any reason I should choose Bangkok University over UMS?

I hope you have access to more than 1-1.3 mil baht. This amount of money may not last you 2-3 years.

BTW, have you been to LOS (Thailand) before??

If you have, then you probably realize that the money you are bringing is no where near the amount to buy a liveable condo in BKK.

I expect to travel with between 25-35k USD

I hope to find at least some sort of part time work while there.

I have not been to Thailand before, and if needed I will rent.

My Florida house is up in value 20% this year alone

Yes, but will it sell at the appraised value, and in how much time?
