MOTOROLA MAY RELOCATE PRODUCTION BASE TO THAILAND

BANGKOK, June 19 Asia Pulse - Motorola Inc, one of the world's giant phone makers, has expressed interest in relocating its mobile and fixed-line phone production base to Thailand because it views there is much more room for the market to grow.

Deputy Prime Minister and Information and Communication Technology Minister Suchai Charoenratanakul revealed on Sunday that he met with Ed Sander, President and CEO of Motorola Inc, last week and took the opportunity to invite the company to move its production base to Thailand.

He said it is likely that Motorola will relocate its manufacturing base as proposed since there are a large number of phone users in Thailand.

The company views that there is much more room for mobile phone market growth in the country given the fact that Thailand has a total population of up to around 65 million. At present, the number of existing mobile phones in the country total more than 30 million and that of fixed-line phones 8.5 million.

As well, Thailand could become the phone distribution center for Indochina and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) because of its geographical advantage, he noted.

He said the government would attempt to boost investment sentiment so that Motorola would have confidence in the country's business environment.

The Motorola president said Thailand is a country where total sales of mobile phones have grown significantly and there is a lot of demand for various mobile phones.
