Filing Child Abuse charges against a teacher that hits students.

Not for me, but read a post about a guy whose step-child was lined up with others by a teacher and hit with a steel ruler along the wrists. Last week there was a video of students being beaten with cane on their backs.

It is obviously illegal, and I presume it falls under the category of child abuse.

So for parents who have children physically abused by a teacher as form of punishment, what would the process be to file charges of child abuse against the teacher?

Has anybody got any experiences of doing so?

Or seeing it happen?

I haven't.

This aint the west ya know, good luck with that, or any other complaint you as a "ferang" want to file.

First it will be denied, as a misunderstanding, then it will be 'we'll look into it', dont hold your breath as to getting any actual results.

IMHO

No there isn't. There has so far been no indication that that poster will file charges with the police.

14 page thread. Without going through it all, do you know what the result of the charges filed with the police were?

No, I have no interest in the subject but since you started a thread about it I thought you might. The topic has been done many times on Thaivisa. You have only to search.

I have.

Plenty of instances of the abuse happening. I cannot find any instances of criminal convictions.

The answer is simple. Don't send your children to schools that hit,

Well no, that's not an answer. It isn't child specific. It is about all children.

Call the NYT, BBC, CNN. Tell them you have a big new story.

So I guess the question could be widened.

Has anybody seen of a Thai teacher being criminally convicted for child abuse for caning/hitting/abuses the children in their care?

You might want to expand it to Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew says...

In his autobiography The Singapore Story he described his time at Raffles Institution in the 1930s, mentioning that he was caned there for chronic lateness by the then headmaster, D. W. McLeod. He wrote: "I bent over a chair and was given three of the best with my trousers on. I did not think he lightened his strokes. I have never understood why Western educationists are so much against corporal punishment. It did my fellow students and me no harm."[36]

I personally don't know of any teachers who have faced criminal charges, but I believe if there is real physical harm to a child they will be charged.

In my experience, if the parents come to the school and complain, the school and teacher will try to reach a solution to the problem. This may include everything from an apology to dismissal. If there isn't a reconciliation, then the parents can bring in the police and that is when stuff happens.

I know of several teachers who have been discharged for abusive behavior. In all those cases their was an admission by the teacher that they had done it and there was collaborating evidence, such as the rest of the class. The difference between the student and the teacher is the degree of punishment.

I have already posted the pdf file that reads the Thai law against school sponsored corporal punishment. As stated before, on the first day of class, my wife shows it to the teacher and lo' and behold, venerable son does not get hit for the entire year.

Useful at the police station, as they then cannot deny that you know more about it than they do.clap2.gif

In the past I've worked in primary government schools were all students, good and bad, had a taste of the cane on their backsides at the start of term to let them know what to expect if they stepped out of line.

I'm currently working in a private school and the parents of problem students have told the teachers to whack their children if the are cheeky but the teachers won't do it. I'm still not sure why some teachers choose to hit kids when we've found that taking away activities such as watching cartoons or playing games is a much better approach, carrot and stick comes to mind.

I've noticed the younger teachers are far better at psychological punishment compared to the older teachers that rely solely on physical punishment regardless of being in government or private schools.

As to the original post, there's nothing that can be done as you'll hit brick walls every which way you turn. Move schools and be done with it as nothing will change apart from you'll find yourself ostracised for being a pain in the ar5e.

you could see at least half the thai teachers suspended or sacked if they were to follow this up

obviously I don't know that for a fact but have seen enough to know that that number would not be far from the truth
