Suspended ceiling in the bathroom looks shit, what is the minimum clearance for plasterboard ceiling (small/non green) downlights? How to go about putting a plasterboard ceiling up, I guess with timber frame attached to the concrete... can't find plasterboard in Homepro (Gah!)

We are just having the ceiling installed in our new build. The bathroom hasn't been installed yet but you can see the system for the living room.

Go to a specialist ceiling materials supplier rather than HomePro where you can buy all the hanger bars, and they have specific plasterboard for bathroom installations.

^ that's going to be one hell of a ceiling Rawhod, nice one.

For the OP, he is only wanting a ceiling in his 2x2 bathroom so I think ....well personally I would try and do it in a more manageable way.

I like and am more used to timber batten framing. Run some 2x2 battens around the perimeter then fit the same as ceiling joists in between at say 400centres..

You could then fix a foilbacked plasterbd to the battens and simply fill and paint.

I would make the ceiling more interesting and get a pack of shera wood effect plank. Pin each one individually, can butt joint and can easily have your lighting points set up, hole cutting as you go.

Fitting plasterboard in a confined space believe me is not easy.....especially if you are on your own, holding and screwing takes skill and strength to master.

The light clearance depends on what you buy, the risk is fire from overheating....or dodgy wiring. It has to be a compromise of the headroom you want in the bathroom and the safe depth of void...say 300mm.

Why the need for a new frame?

Either knock the old ceiling down, or just screw new sheets over the top.

Make sure you use plasterboard glue or it will collapse after time.

Normal plasterboard is fine for bathroom ceilings, walls is a different board.

10mm plasterboard spans 600mm on stud centres.

Btw I don't understand what you say about the light?

Hi Kris,

a suspended ceiling (like an office) is held up by wires so not strong enough to take the plasterboard.

downlights project into the ceiling space and halogen lights get very hot so need some (sizable) space above.

Does global house have plasterboard?

For you, the best place for plasterboard is very close to tesco in superhighway. Do the u turn under the highway and then its in the left before you get to tesco.

Actually, I don't think global stocks it, they didn't when I was after some.

How bigs your bathroom?

If you dont want to use suspended frames just span timber wall to wall.

I know what you mean by the wire, it should be a 5mm steel hanging rod, by specs every 1200mm. I've been doing steel framing and plasterboard for over 20 years s happy t help if you need.

For the record...global don't. homepro don't,nokon panich (?) don't stock plasterboard of any variety.

Thanks for the location i will check it out.

sorry if i was talking down to you kris... i didn't realise you have some trade experience...

it's only 2m by 2m bathroom, so 2x2 battons round the edge then bang in one cross frame no problem. Thanks for the offer of assistance.
