Cambodian labour force exodus eases

CHANTHABURI, June 19 -- The problem of departing Cambodian workers flocking back to their homeland due to the rumour that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) planned a crackdown on foreign workers has now eased.

The situation at the Thai-Cambodian border in Chanthaburi province, both at the permanent Thai-Cambodian checkpoint at Pong Nam Ron district and the temporary border crossing at Soi Dao district has returned to normal.

A large group of Cambodians have been waiting to cross the border to the Thai side since early today to purchase consumer goods and to work.

The border crossings have seen a week of foreign labourers leaving the country, as many Cambodian workers feared they would be expelled from Thailand by the ruling military junta.

Nonetheless, Chanthaburi Thai-Cambodian Border Tourism and Trade Association vice-chairman Sombat Jeungtrakul said the labourers coming back to Thailand today are mostly workers who returned home to legalise their documents to be able to work legally in Thailand.

Mr Sombat said the minimum wage in Thailand is three times higher than in Cambodia, attracting many Khmers to return to Thailand to seek employment. (MCOT online news)

Don't worry, they will all be back soon.

Hope NCPO will implement a proper tracking system, not only for them but for the rest 1.2 million illegal workers still in Thailand.

From neighbouring countries or Farangs.

Never denied anybody's will to work and have a better life......but do contribute to the country you are in.......pay your taxes.

In your argumentation it would be OK if I rob a bank. Because there are also natives who rob banks.

If they earn 150Baht per day......they wouldn't have to pay any taxes.

You do understand what I mean, so please, don't try to get clever.

Awww... did I hurt your feelings petal?

Sorry but first you say "don't worry, they will be back soon" then "Hope NCPO will implement a proper tracking system..." Either they won't be back or if they will it would be outside any tracking system, it's the whole premise of being an ILLEGAL, get it?

The Junta are on the case again. 180 000 Cambodians left and now they are returning legally that will allow them to have "rights" in Thailand. They will be able to report crimes to the police. They will be seen as human and not a faceless labour force that has no voice.

This is a "populist policy" that cost the tax payers nothing.

Well done DRT.

Costas was referring to illegal farangs who make a whopping lot more than Thais and should be paying about 1000 per month on a 40k per month job. They are an insult not only to Thais, but ferangs who have work permits. The illegal ferangs skip taxes, get a day or three paid vacation every 90 days, and are WAY unqualified to be teachers (or anything else). Most get employed as teachers if they are young and/or good looking, and the schools parade them out each morning because they are window dressing that is a marketing magnet.

I honestly do not think General Prayuth O-cha will do anything about this situation at all because...it is a yellow concession.

Very adroitly, the administrations of both colors have not and will not even discuss this deception by Thais to Thais simply because private schools are owned by very powerful people who could eat both Thaksin and Suthep for breakfast and not even burp. . But... it is not corruption...it's business! It's not rice pledging by thugs -- it's a concerted, institutionalized way for Thais to deceive Thais and employ illegal foreign workers for a higher goal -- being the sacred plastic cow of education.

This is one of a dozen reasons why people who actually read multiple news sources (let's say more than five) are not impressed by any side or color here, and the history of the entire last century is an endless cycle of deception. The Thai people are wonderful. I have never read, seen or heard about a wonderful Thai government. Never. They are all agenda-driven prevaricators of the highest order, with one exception and he is not a politician. If the farang on TVF really supported the King and yellows they would stop back biting anyone who disagrees with them on every point. Any foreigner who claims to support any side without being able to criticize the side they "choose" is, I believe, under-informed, self-effacing and ultimately ineffective -- in short, a whinging tosser altogether.

General Prayuth O-cha is a wonderful and temporary stabilizing influence. I actually believe the good General -- I mean that sincerely -- is honest today. Maybe not honest ten years ago, and maybe not honest ten years from now, but I believe he is been honest since the coup. He loves his country and wants this crap to stop -- and that is what most Thais want too. Further, as he approaches retirement he has no personal agenda he needs to further. THAT says a lot. Her simply has no reason to lie.

There is a real downside here, though.

As soon as elections come back, the hounds of both breeding pens will be loose........again.

I am a centrist, and reserve the right to criticize those I support and those I do not support, and will never be intimidated, keyboard beaten by some troll whinger, or coerced into becoming blind to the faults of any side. I reserve the right to be infuriatingly neutral.

There are some who have been badly exploited and still are.

If you read the reports from various sources you will see there are employers who pay very little, taking advantage of the illegal status of the workers.

There are also reports of employers taking the tea money they are forced to pay Govt officials and police from the workers wages so they end up working for virtually nothing.

I see the ministry of labor boss has been given the chop now so with a bit of luck the exploitation of immigrant workers will stop.

Have been up to Three Pagodas Pass several time and on one trip recently the Mrs got talking to a Burmese lady on the songtau, she was told that the girls that work in the garment making outfits on the Thai side of the border are paid 90 b a day, these are girls that live in Burma and cross the border every day to work.

Total load of bull crap. They have arrested over 1000 Burmese within a few days in Chiang Mai alone, and raiding more streets, apartments, and locations daily. They even raided the Chiang Mai zoo, arresting illegals!!!

This goes right up there with, this is not a coup and we didn't have anything to do with the Facebook shut down.
