Buying a wireless router

Featured Replies

The True online technician just told me that he thinks my router is failing and should be replaced.

Their sales office staff however, tells me that if True replaces the router, I must sign a one year contract that includes a fairly onerous cancellation fee. I'm not sure how long I'll stay in my current condominium and I'm somewhat reluctant to sign this contract. So, I'm in the market to buy a wireless router.

My needs are fairly limited. The router will be for personal use only. I'm not into gaming and my most challenging use will be video streaming. I use Netflix (with a VPN) and occasionally watch you tube videos. My ISP is True Online and I have their "ultra hi-speed" internet 13M/1M package.

While specific brand/model recommendations are welcome, I'm particularly interested in knowing what to look for (technical specifications?) and what if anything, to watch out for and/or avoid.

Thanks, Kelly

Unfortunately, this is probably the technician trying to deflect the real problem which could very well be a physical line problem--that is, nothing to do with your router...it's a problem with the line somewhere. The True technician could easily check the line using his test modem/router or digital line tester....he could even just look at the modem diagnostics in the modem/router firmware menus. Every time over the years when a True or TOT technician had to come to my house to check my True DOCSIS/cable connection or TOT ADSL connection that is what occurred.

My friend is about to return to Thailand and I have advised him to go wireless. I have a spare Netgear router which I will give him to take back, at the moment he has a basic Thomson modem with an RJ45 connection to the PC. Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of the settings, connection type, encapsulation, MTU size etc. and is there a number he can call to find out the router username and password requred to connect so I could possibly configure it for him before his return. His landline and TV is with True, don't know if there are any other providers in Bangsaray.

Thanks

I've just ordered a D-Link DSL-2750E from Lazada 1,090 baht. Seems to get a good write up.

These relate to the computer itself in concert w/ his particular connection, so can't be known in advance, but setting other than the default really will make little discernible difference I think. Get an internet optimization program: Auslogics Boostspeed has a component.

Reset the modem if it hasn't been. Then look in the manual, which you can simply download from the vendor, or google.
