PATTAYA: -- Navy and police officers rounded up 70 alleged prostitutes, including more than 50 transvestites and 7 Madagascan women, in Pattaya early Thursday.

The operation took place at 1 am. The officers arrested the suspected prostitutes from the Pattaya Beach and Walking Street.

"One of the suspects is a man and ten others are Thai women". The math does not add up 70-50=20 then minus 7 =13 rolleyes.gif wai2.gif

It still makes me chuckle that prostitution is illegal in Thailand...

Just make it legal already and make them start paying tax... Imagine the revenue!... ££££££££

Making prostitution legal and make them pay taxes only benefit the tax department.

Asking tea money to keep them out of jail makes more benefit to the people who are actually arresting them and need a day of paperwork.

70 x 1,000 = 70,000 Baht in one day.

And release them as soon as possible so that the they can arrest them again the next day.

"tea money"

Farang Fantasy Factory still up, running and blowing smoke 24/7.

They must have been very hard to find these!

" They must have been very hard ..."

I doubt that was a requirement.

Leave the hookers alone. They are the best part of Fun Town.

If it is illegal then they should be arrested, turning a blind eye to the issue is no answer, but go round arresting all the prostitutes will turn Pattaya in to a ghost town in days.

It is the oldest profession in the world, you will never stop it, it will just go underground, the answer is to legalise it, just make it a crime to live of the earnings of a prostitute, control prostitutes, coerce women in to prostitution, use the services of a woman under 18, etc.

LMAO it says "more than" 50 ladyboys.... 10 Thai women and 1 man. The Madagascan women might or might not be ladyboys it doesn't specify, but the "more than" 50 clearly fills up the gap in the maths.... and the poster who thought that logically meant they're all foreign.. what?

What are they trying to do? If they are rounding up all prostitutes, they only have 10,000 more to go in Pattaya, 10,000-15,000 in Bangkok, good luck guys the Army and cops have an impossible job ahead of them, like most all the other BS they are talking of doing.

It's all quite civilised down here in Phuket. At least, it used to be...

The illegality of prostitution refers primarily to forcing women to have sexual intercourse with clients; these cases usually involve brothels that imprison women in terrible conditions that foreigners do not frequent.

In Patong there are only three aspects of the law that tourists might like to be aware of:

1. If a woman is under 18, then the client would be guilty of paying a minor for sex, which is a serious offense.

2. Ladyboys are requested not to sell their services on the street.

This is a gentle suppression rather than an arrest, and is done to reduce the problem of tourists having their possessions stolen from someone who will be difficult to find.

Many bar-girls refuse many men, while accepting others as clients since it does also largely depend on whether they both like each other as humans.

Ladyboys, however, are often not so choosy and not so sincere in their relationships, which are based more on sex and money, and the police therefore try to ensure that if ladyboys must approach foreigners, that it is done in a suitable place so that the atmosphere is kept safe and fun.

3. A bar-fine simply entitles someone to take the girl out of the bar, be it to a disco and dance, have dinner or whatever. In this, no law is broken.

As long as everything is mutually agreeable then there is no problem.

If a tourist does agree to pay a girl for bedroom antics, then he must pay the agreed price or else he would be guilty of deception or cheating. This has nothing to do with the sexual aspect. If a client has agreed to pay a bar-girl to act as a tour guide, translator or whatever else, then he must keep his word and pay the agreed fee.

They certainly were not arrested on the basis that they were prostitutes.

Police are trying to prevent other types of crimes that these people could commit.

And perhaps to remove these people from public view on the beaches...

Nothing else....

It always was legal in Thailand, until western governments decided to interfere ---so now they have a "Thai Solution"

Prostitution has been illegal in Thailand[3] since 1960, when a law was passed under pressure from the United Nations -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Thailand

Prostitution is regulated in Thailand. The arrests would have been for soliciting not prostitution. The barfine system keeps it all above board, so don't expect any changes.

Given that there was one man and 10 Thai women out of 70 then logically the other 59 must be foreign women so they would also need to change the employment laws to give them work permits as well.

Read it again. It said there were 50 transvestites. I suppose it is possible they were women dressing up as men.

Just clean up all the trash.... That would improve matters. The girls provide a service that some folk are willing to pay for..... Leave them be. Sweep the roads and stop Thais tipping garbage everywhere.... That's would improve things far more. If a bloke can't enjoy a lady of leisure as and when he desires, then we may as we'll be born as women or gay......and that's not homophobic BTW.

Hardly headline news is it ?

It wouldn't take much more than 30 minutes to round up 70 prostitutes in London or any other world capital or major city if one knew where to look so let's maintain some perspective here.
