Foreigners to pay more to drive into Singapore

SINGAPORE: -- Foreigners driving into Singapore will have to pay more from August, the Land Transport Authority announced on Tuesday.

From Aug 1, drivers of foreign-registered cars will have to pay $35 for a daily permit – up from $20 today.

And those driving goods vehicles will have to pay $40 for a monthly permit – four times the $10 charged today.

The LTA said it periodically reviews foreign vehicle permit fees to ensure that the cost of owning and using a foreign-registered vehicle in Singapore corresponds with that of owning and using a Singapore-registered vehicle.

Or they might drive leased cars. Leased cars have plates from the place of the leasing company.

What a totally preposterous and idiotic move. Malaysia should respond by closing all crossings to Singapore, and imposing a ten-fold increase on all Singaporean vehicles crossing into Malaysia. Let's see how long their ridiculous racist policy lasts...!!

Unfortunately GeorgeO the Singaporean Government are very seldom wrong when it comes to this kind of move, they will have done their market research and will have crunched the numbers time and time again. It costs approximately 140,000-160,000 SGD to put a Hyundai Excel on the road there, the majority of that is the CoE (Certificate of Entitlement) and various other charges.

They will not allow it to be financially viable for commuters to own a foreign car and drive in and out on a daily basis, they will extract every last dollar from people wanting to visit Singapore, whether it is business or pleasure. The number of cars travelling back and forth across the bridge will rise every month/year no matter what what charges are imposed, Singapore is/ will continue to boom and they shall play it for all it's worth (and who can blame them?)

If they want to drive on Singaporean roads, they should be paying Singaporean prices, why not?

It didn't appear to be a 10 fold increase though!

It isn't racist, a Singaporean living in Malaysia would have to pay wouldn't he/she?

Singapore has excellent public transport and reliable and affordable taxis. It also does not have lots of space. Basically if you wish to have your own wheels, you have to pay for it, whether you are a resident or a visitor. Hard not to admire their organisational ability, whilst being a bit gunshy about their authoritarian society.

and that asean free trade or free something agreement kicks in next year.

obviously not worth the paper it is written on.

if sing is going to preempt with this, all the others are going to protect their cronies and money spinners similarly too. the asian way wont die just because of some high falutin treaty.

I don't know if this action is racist but Singapore is certainly the wallet vampire of SEA.

So the act of any foreign vehicle driving on another country's roads should carry a tax liability payable by the owner / driver of the foreign vehicle? Balls. It is the host country's infrastructure and their own responsibility.

No just vehicles....... I don't see why not, taxing foreigners is always popular!

If a visitor is contributing to the wear and tear of the roads, why not?

You think foreigners should be exempt, crikey, I live in Thailand where we pay a premium!
