A Copy Of Windows 8 Running On A Only 2 Gb Of Memory School Computer....

Hello,

Just got a new desktop with a copy of Windows 8 on it. I haven't used version 8 before, but all I can say for now is that I prefer the 7 version.

Just had the setup ready, when the PC started to shut down. ( It's also attached to a projector, but that happens as well without having the projector switched on).

Then I had a look at the system and I guess here lies the problem. The memory consists of only 2 GB, while the 64 version of Windows 8 is running.

As far as i remember was 4 GB the minimum to run a 64 bit version, right? Now I'm planning to put on W.7, the 32 bit version, as nobody and i mean nobody at the school seems to understand what I'm talking about.

My question here is: Could a too low memory cause the shutdown, especially when you click on a website.? It turns off and I see a missing connection sign to the screen/ PC sign on the screen.

Any advice is deeply appreciated. Cheers-

W8 Enterprise 64 runs OK (but rather slow starting) on one of our 2 GB PCs, doesn't shut down. I gave it another 2GB for its birthday and things improved somewhat smile.png

I suspect you have another issue (overheat perhaps?) that's causing that problem.

Do you have a genuine W8?

Give it Classic Shell once you get it sorted, works like W7.

Thanks, didn't think about checking that as well. Is it possible that a too low memory can just switch W.8 off?

It's of course not a genuine version and honestly speaking I've never seen one on a school computer. How do I get Classic Shell?

Wouldn't it be much better, just to put a good functioning W. 7 on which I had installed a couple of times???

I also had a hard time to change the installed MS Office version from Thai into English. There's no option, so I deleted it, then tried a few different 0'113 versions, but wasn't successful.

Now I've got a 32 bit version of MS Office 2010 on ,seems to work fine.

Is it just because it's new and I'm not that familiar with 8 than with other programs that I dislike Windows 8 a lot?

Thanks for your great input.

Download Classic Shell here (free) http://www.classicshell.net/

I'm not sure how W8 reacts when it discovers it isn't genuine, could be to shutdown, others may know.

BUT

Please don't discuss how to make a hookey copy of W8 work on this forum, illegal activities are not permitted.

If you have a known good W7 it can't hurt to install it (of course that's legal isn't it?), but be aware if it's a new PC you may not find W7 drivers, find the drivers first.

Thank you very much. I have to apologize talking about not really genuine software. In my ten years of teaching here, I haven't had the chance to see one laptop, or desktop at schools with a genuine program on it.

I'm not in the position to tell them to buy genuine programs. Would I install W 7 on it, I'll get all the drivers. I'd be more than happy to know what others think about Windows 8, as I have the feeling that it's crap.

So please excuse my thread, as I wasn't the one who bought, or out that program on that computer.

Once you get past the awful Metro interface and get the desktop back by installing ClassicShell W8 is actually better than W7 in many respects, most of the controls are in the same or similar places.

The Computer will not shut down if its not genuine, I agree there must be another Problem with it. As Chicog mentioned, check the System log by Right clicking on "my computer" and then choose manage -> computer management opens up, there you go to the "event viewer" windows logs, you can click through the events there should be a red explanationmark at the time the computer switched off hopefully if you can post the error here, is there any message before it shuts down? How long after the startup does it shut down?

If it would be a problem about the activation, windows would ask you to put in a genuine key or something like that :)

its not about the ram.

If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

did you change anything before you upgraded to win 8? why did you upgrade it? :) was there an error in the previous windows version.

I'll see the "patient" tomorrow, but do have a very tight teaching schedule. The program was on the PC, when somebody from the school had bought it. It shuts down mostly when I want to click on a website. Then it shuts down immediately, shows that no connection via Video card's available.

It's a brand new HP desktop, possible that somebody took one memory card out, as i don't think such a computer comes with only 2 GB of memory. There's a video card for four monitors installed, just curious if that could be a problem.

Then I have to switch it off manually, do restart and it works well. I do not think it's an overheating problem, but will try to find that out.

Thanks for all your good advice, sorry if I'm not able to thank all and each of you.

Wish you all a nice start of the week,. Monday's knocking at the door. Halleluja.....facepalm.gif

Thanks a lot! I might be wrong that I dislike W 8, as i was used to 7 for quite a while. Will try Classic Shell and let you know what I could find out. Thanks again.

When I had a problem after upgrading some hardware and Windows thought I was running my licensed Win8 on another computer, it did not shut down immediately. IIRC it turned the Windows Desktop wall paper black with some watermark saying that the Windows installed was invalid/illegal, and it would auto-shutdown after a specified period (ten minutes?)

Without trying to be smart, have you checked out the status of your drivers?

Control Panel, System, Device Manager. (When you open Control panel, change the default "View By" to small icons from Category)

If you still have update capability on the pirate version, make sure you are downloading Microsoft as opposed to just Windows, and run an update. This will normally sort out most driver issues/updates. If not, right click on any items showing the yellow exclamation mark and click update driver.

As long as your mainboard is compatible (not too old).

A short update, considering the "high spectrum" PC, made in freaking China. The usable memory was only 1.87, out of 2 GB.

I've tried several things, finally added a one GB memory card and since now it seems to work.

Got 2.89 usable memory now and it works well with projector ( connected to the ordinary VGA, the monitor to the digital VGA).

PC is much faster, tried the Classic Shell and find it more suitable than the Windows 8 features.

Thanks for your help.

I would think 2Gb of memory is rather slim

I run win 7 64bit and use most of 4Gb of memory, with 8Gb available.

Okay, I've got to be honest, now. The freaking matterfagging unit did shut down again. Took two hours, instead of a few minutes before.

in my experience it is excellent and very robust, my win 8 laptop rarely gets a re boobt and i cant remember it ever crashing

Can you identify the Motherboard within?

I have a 32 bit X86 copy of Windows 8.1 which I got from a friend as I want to try it out.

I have an old Acer Travelmate 6410 which I want to use as a test bed and an Acer Aspire 5738ZG plus an HP Envy desktop.

The 6410 cannot see/read the DVD and I cannot open it either though the 5738 and the HP can see and read the DVD.

Does anybody have any idea how I can get around the problem?

Perhaps burn or copy the CD to an external hard drive and try to read it that way might work?

Will post a photo next week on Tuesday. It showed a Critical Corruption Issue.....the program tried to recover, but then didn't start up again.

Thought only people here were corrupt. Another lesson learned.

This usually means there is a memory issue: a 3rd-party .dll or driver is overwriting memory or a physical memory issue -- most likely a video driver, or less likely the RAM modules are incorrectly spec'd to the requirements of the motherboard.

Thanks for the good points you've made. I've added one GB RAM and now have 2.84 usable. It doesn't even have a video card which could also be a problem.

Some programs are 32 b\it, while other are in the 64 bit version. I'll first try to check the video driver when I'm back on Tuesday.

I added A Samsung memory card to the existing Chinese one. But the problem was already before. The PC is much faster now, but is still switching off.

Time will tell.

It's important that all the memory modules are the same type and speed and that they are rated correctly to the specs of the motherboard.

2.84 usable is normal as BIOS reserves memory for hardware devices. Onboard Video is using a large chunk of that reserved memory.

Try to find the Make/Model/Version of the Motherboard and check the official website to see if there are ANY Win8 drivers you can download and apply.

It's pretty rough to figure a Chinese memory card out. There's nothing about the type, such as DRR 3, or so on it. Just a lot of numbers.

I had only 1.84 usable memory available, that's why I added a samsung memory card. Have you got the link how to check your system's memory status and cards that fit in?

I remember, there's a very useful website, but my Alzheimer is unstoppable. Thanks a lot.
