Hi

I am getting ready to renew my retirement visa and regarding the Letter from my Embassy of 70K coming in every month, does this have to be translated into Thai or will they accept it in english?

The letter will be accepted if it is in English.

Only 65K baht is required.

The letter will be in your home country currency and immigration will do the baht calculation when you apply for the extension of stay (it is not a visa).

The "letter" is usually a Statutory Declaration from Embassy (Australia is Stat Dec) + have letter from AUS accountant advising payment of 65k bht p/m from AUS source.

For UK it isn't a Statutory Declaration like the US embassy issues without proof, it is confirmation that they have seen original proof of your pension or income

... and it is the position of the US State Department worldwide that they have no way of telling whether such a proof originating in the USA is authentic or has not been altered without a documented chain of custody.

The US Embassy in Bangkok will not even authenticate a document presumably issued by the US Government itself.

My dear ubonjoe I'd like you to know that 2 days ago I went to immigration's office in Nathon (Samui) also for my first year retirement extension, the letter from my Thai bank (Krungsri) saying

I had the 800,000 Bahts for at least 3 month was in English....refused! Even thought I had my saving account booklet up to date as an absolute proof! Plus they told me you are coming too early your visa is up to 31 of July please come back the 23.

I just used a US Embassy letter in English two weeks ago here in Phuket without a problem as I've done for the past 9 years. I have read though that some provinces require a Thai translation.

That is because you had a letter from a Thai bank confirming your bank balance not a letter from your embassy confirming income.

It has been years since of have heard of any immigration office not accepting a income document in English.

Yes yes, no problem it was not a contradiction :-) I told you only because I thought its important YOU received information from every places in the country like for instance in Samui (at least this time) they told me to come back only one week before the due date, when in some places one month before is OK. Plus by the way I had no certificate of good heatlh by a Doctor, so anyway I should have come back.

the notarized letter from the us embassy in no way guarantees that the amount on the form is correct.

the notary only certifies that the person presenting the form is who they say they are and that they

have sworn, before an notary , that the information is correct. the information on the form is sworn to

by the citizen, the us government makes no claim that the information in the form is correct beyond

verfiying the signature.

How about the Canadian Embassy? Anyone had any experience on how they certify the monthly income. I don;t want to make useless trips to complete this. Thanks

As I understand it, there is a vast difference between UK and US notaries public.

In the UK a notary is a public official certified by legal training for an indefinite period of time. Many UK notaries are lawyers, but they do not have to be. A UK notary stamp and signature signify the document holder appeared before them, provided validated support for the contents of the document, and then signed it. Thus, the notary signifies responsibility for the document's contents.

In the US, a notary is a temporary commission, it is not a public office, and there is no legal training required. Because US notaries public are commissioned for only a period of time, US notaries must signify their commission expiry date on all documents signed. The stamp and signature of a US notary signify the person named within the document appeared before them and signed the document. Thus, only the signatory is responsible for the document's contents.

In the US, if validation of the contents of a document are required, a lawyer must do it.

briantk41, The Canadian Embassy in Bangkok is very easy to deal with, you don't even have to go there, you can fill out an affidavit form and sign it in front of a lawyer in your area.

The lawyer notarizes the affidavit.

Please then mail it to the Embassy along with the following documents:

- a copy of your passport with your signature

- a statement confirming your pension or other income

- notary service fee of THB 1,500.- (can be a bank draft or postal money order, payable to Embassy of Canada)

- a copy of the lawyer's ID card, signed by the lawyer

We will then issue a letter to Thai Immigration confirming your pension income and mail to your address.

You can change the reason from retirement to marriage if you want.to but it can only be done when your current extension ends.

The only way to change it without waiting for it to end would be to go out without a re-entry permit and get a single non-o and then apply for the extension based upon marriage.
