Some of you have the mentality of 13 year old boys.

Actually, most of the younger generation of expats I know here are married.

So the younger expats that you know in Thailand are a representative sample of the entire younger expat generation across all provinces of Thailand?

I'm just sharing my experiences, like the OP requested.

It would be nice if we could have a discussion here that didn't degenerate into childish smut and pointless bickering, but I guess it's never going to happen.

I shared my experience living near several large universities in Thailand and the reference that immediately followed was to a 13-year old school boy

Back to the OP,

It's all about sex.

It really isn't.

For you it isn't, but for most normal young guys it is.

There is nothing in Thailand that I couldn't get in the US apart from sex.

Earning money in US, easy, property is cheap, nature, country, mountains, rivers, hiking, cycling, all much better in the US.

Food cheaper and better quality in US. Drugs and booze, way easier and higher quality in the US.

Sex, a dead loss, never had a decent sexual encounter in the US.

The USA is the greatest country in the world for everything except women.

Boy, did this conversation go downhill quickly. All I did was go pick my Dad up at the airport and came back to find this.

Outta here.

Shame, isn't it? This place sometimes seems dominated by those who are either unable or unwilling to accept that not everyone shares their opinions and motivations. A discussion about the newer breed of expats was always destined to go this way.

Maybe the word you are looking for is "majority" instead of "dominated".

Why not accept you are not representative of the vast numbers of foreigners in Thailand.

PS

I really appreciate the way you turn to personal insults when faced with an opinion that differs to your own.

Do you see me insulting you?

What makes you think your opinion is any more representative than mine? Most expats I know laugh at this place, it hardly represents the majority.

And what personal insults?

edited to remove quote from deleted post.

As for majority, almost every foreigner I know in Thailand is sleeping with a person who wouldn't look twice at them in the USA.

Thailand is a great place for young people who can party all night, sleep 'til noon, and still get up in time to trade palladium futures on the London Metals Exchange or write the next killer app.

These palladium people make less than engrit teachers.............lol.

Sounds like jealousy to me

Seems like the kids of today are the "Expectancy Age" as they all expect to get a "great job" ....they all expect the government "will take care of them" ....they all expect to start at the "top" ...well I guess they can all "Expect" a big shock!

Could you BE any more out of touch?

It's easy to dump on today's kids when you had your prime years during a period of unprecedented growth in the West.

The development cycle's moved on now.

Far, FAR greater competition for jobs/careers now.

People have to get into debt to get further education now.

There's no more jobs for life in the steel mills, the post office or the national rail network. Money purchase superannuation has replaced final salary exposing pensions to the vagaries of the global equity markets.

I'm always amused when people like you and the other smug, self-satisfied peacocks strut around this forum like you were bloody PIONEERS or something when in actual fact, you were just born at the right time, in the right place and most of you have succeeded in SPITE of yourselves thanks to that.

Out of ToucH?????

Yes son, and happy to be......I've been through all the economic cycles you can imagine ...recession of the early 80's, interest rates 18% for 30 year mortgage, high inflation, Stock market crash, bursting of the real estate bubble....etc......

Sounds like you've been "in touch" yourself TOO much ....I'm happy to be "out of touch" and have my wife do it. A lot of life is how you not only handle the "ups" but the "downs".

What you refer to as competition, debt, no more jobs,,,etc. is a mere blip compared to the things I went through and the generation before (the "great" depression)...so quit whinging will you and get on with life.w00t.gif

Most young men don't share your shortcomings.

The one I just highlighted!

Are you claiming that isn't an insult?

Why? You just admitted you couldn't get laid back home. Presumably that reflects on you rather than the millions of potential partners in your homeland.

mr biker,,

what makes you an expat then?

why did you move here,,? if you have moved here,

or are you just on holiday>?

please tell us why you decided to become an expat in thailand,?

I'm an expat for the same reason anyone else is - I reside outside my home country. I moved here for several of the reasons I listed above.

I recently turned 40. The people I know socially here in Bangkok are mostly from mid 20s up to my age.

Some of them aren't settling for less - I know a few 20s/30s on 6 figures US - one of the big benefits of the growth of the digital economy. Certainly not most, of course.

For those that don't, spending a few years travelling and living abroad can help a CV upon return to the homeland, it adds interest, character and life experience.

I would actually question the thread title.

Not many young people with good prospects back home, living and working in Thailand.

Mainly losers and minimum wage workers without much education, often working as English teachers.

Socialising?

With whom? People who don't speak their language and don't really like them?

Socialising happens with your peers, in your home country.

The "world is my oyster"....an expression meant to mean the the world is ours to enjoy.

When I was a very young boy my world consisted of my family and my families home.

When I started school (kindergarden) at age 5 my world expand a few more blocks which I used to have to walk to on my own (after my mother showed me)

Then I went to grammer school (different school about 1/2 mile away) and my world grew larger.

Then I got transportation (a bicycle) and my world became even larger (used to explore areas on the bike but rarely more than a few miles out)

Then in my teens I got a driver license and again my world expanded greatly....I could drive hundreds of miles in a few hours.

With the advent of flying .......the world became my oyster. and so I traveled when I could.

The post asks why do young people come to Thailand? ....the real question is "Why NOT live in Thailand?"

whether young or old ...Thailand is just another place on this rock we call earth. With the advent of flying we are now able to pick and choose where we WANT to live!

And the answer to the question.....is ...because we CAN!

Simple as that.

Cycling way better in the USA.

Here, too humid, roads dangerous, equipment too expensive, limited and hard to find.

Nothing in Thailand can beat the rim around Crater Lake in Oregon or a cycle through Yosemite national park.

The USA is the one of the best countries for cycling in the world.

Ok, if you are fluent in Thai.

Else how you gonna converse?

My English for today has been on ThaiVisa and several other websites including Twitter plus a few email messages. I have not spoken a word of English today -- only Thai with Thai persons who don't speak English, my favorite kind.

I have met many people, mixed, socialised and I dont speak fluent Thai. They spoke English.

For Australians ,Thailand is a cheap place to stay.

For us it's the culture that is the drawcard. We have sun and beaches as good as any Thai beach.

Why not take a couple years out to backpack it and get whatever jobs are going? Lifes way to short and it's almost expected Aussie kids will do this. Most will eventually go home, a handful will stay.

Don't take life too seriously, it's not permanent.
