TAT to restore confidence in Thai tourism market among EU and American tourists

BANGKOK, 10 July 2014 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is gearing up to restore confidence in the country’s tourism market to meet next year's tourism revenue growth target of 2.2 trillion baht.

TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing Juthaporn Rerngronasa said the TAT has adjusted its marketing strategy for markets in Europe, the Americas, and Africa in the second half of this year.

Roadshows and product briefings will be planned for Europe, South Africa, as well as North and South America. The TAT is coordinating with consulates in many countries to stage Thai festivals. These events are expected to attract up to 500,000 visitors in 40 European and American cities.

Special tour and promotional packages will also be announced during July and August to boost tourist arrival figures.

As political uncertainty remains a big concern for tourism operators, the TAT is working on campaigns to assure tourists and businesses that Thailand’s political situation is returning to normal.

Seems like every ministry in Thailand is getting its own foreign tour since the coup. Too bad Thais are bad at noticing the world around them and learning things from it or they might bring back some valuable information!

TAT expects that no one reads the uncensored news.

Does the uncensored news say that terrorist attacks are still happening everyday? Maybe that the baht is in free fall? Maybe the SET is at record lows? The below graph shows the Thai confidence index is on an upward rise since the coup. What does the uncensored news say about that? All these indicators cannot be controlled or censored by the Junta.

It is the narrative that the Junta cannot control that put it in a good light and show that Thailand is healthier today than it has ever been.

Of course if you read in the uncensored press that it is all doom and gloom then that supports the conspiracy narrative that so many in the PTP and the UDD adopt.

The Chinese are already back in droves and this trend will continue.

Well done to the Junta for their hard work and ability to bring Thailand out of shadows of a failed state.

How about not putting fear into innocent travelers who come to Thailand on a multiple non-O or Tourist-visa, the renewel of which may not be honoured at tsome land borders. People with non-O visa are appearently being refused at several borders now, as are people with multiple tourist-visa's.

There isn't which is my point. The uncensored narrative is simply fodder for conspiracy theorists.

So when people read the uncensored news, the news that the Junta cannot control it puts Thailand in a very strong and confident light.

The "other" uncensored news is an agenda driven propaganda narrative of a dying party and other entities.

You seem to live in a unique world that few of the rest of us are privy to. The flight from Shanghai was almost deserted last night. Have you spent anytime offshore since this all happened? The question you get everywhere is still "how dangerous is it?". Not "is it dangerous?" Nobody wants to come here despite the propaganda - Swampy is a ghosttown for large parts of the day.

Still, I'm pleased you've found a little private universe where the very real problems Thailand is facing in the real world as a result of the current FUBAR are just "agenda driven propaganda".

There was another foreign press item, maybe one of the U&S papers had a story citing that thousands of tourists planning to visit Thailand had instead canceled re-booked to Costa Rica and other lovely places in the America. Costa Rica has no army, very high human development index, lots of medical tourism and very friendly professionally trained and "managed." hotel and travel industry. Costa Rica did very well in the Brazil 2014 World Cup and it received great publicity.

TAT needs to promote more outdoor activities , something like Human trafficking from Burma , cutting down rosewood trees while hiking in national parks , shooting wildlife while checking out amphetamines plants , working on a shrimp boat , buying ivory at the Cambodian border , paying Thai prices at national parks entry points, learning to drive the Thai way with a Thai bus driver as an instructor, get ripped of by a Tuk Tuk drivers on Phuket, I am sure there are many more too numerous to mention , anyway, enjoy. bah.gif

Free drinks for all arriving passengers.

As they wait in the deportation lounge before being shipped out for having overstayed in the past/having no visa/having the wrong visa/having the right visa but the immigration officer is in a bad mood.

Apart from the political upheaval and coup , they really need to look at what is happening to their tourism source ,Europe is in a bad way America is the same i know Australia is not doing well, so Thailand will see less western tourists , TaT should focus on Russia China and India.

How about a 40% discount on all Thai Airline tickets for the next 12 months? It is called a proactive marketing strategy. How about the arrest of all the jet ski scammers in Pattaya, Phuket and Samui? That would be something these neophyte marketing guys could promote. How about relaxing, rather than tightening the tourist visa policies? Free multiple entry visas. How about offering a very good, and well priced national insurance policy for tourists, to take the place of the ones they cannot get now, due to the military takeover? How about doing something positive, anything positive, and real, rather than traveling all over the world jaw boning? Words only have so much impact. Real action, a real demonstration of the awareness of the extent of the problem, and the willingness to fix it, might go a long way towards making a sincere statement to the world. I think that is what people are looking for. Sincerity instead of BS.

Yes Costa Rica did very well at the world cup.

Do you think a dysfunctional government the was openly controlled by a convicted criminal fugitive and that either permitted or was incapable of stopping daily shootings and bombings aimed at any who dared oppose it; whilst also openly stoking calls for civil unrest, insurgency and treasonable breakaway states may have affected the tourist levels here?

Hopefully the Thai tourist industry can be revamped and some of the less savory aspects associated with a culture prevalent in a Kleptocracy and based on the premise of corruption underlying everything can be removed.

Thailand, could if it got its act together, be one of the world's top destinations.

Nope, it was the Suthep fiasco followed by the coup. Pretty simple.

I spend considerable time offshore in the Middle East, Far East and SE Asia, I also have regular Skype calls with UK, Germany and the US.

Not once have I been asked "how dangerous is it". Most asked "are things alright, are you safe" but that was when daily attacks were happening against anyone who dared oppose the Shin clan. Since martial law and their subsequent removal, and the stopping of attacks and arrests of those responsible for previous ones. overseas people I know assume law and order has returned.

One conference director changed the venue for a conference from Bangkok to Indonesia. The conference is late this year but the venue had to be fixed well before the coup. The people who were concerned about traveling to Thailand have do not have the same concerns now that there is a military government in power. The decision was all about bookings nothing to do about the political machinations.

Suvhanabhumi has been quiet at times, and busy at times. Sure its not as busy as I've seen it. But, many of those choosing other destinations or cancelling would have done so whilst the Shin were still clinging to power and nightly attacks were the norm.

Many friends, colleagues and acquaintances in HK, UAE, Qatar and the UK have no qualms about coming here now. Either for business or holidays.

So we all have our own experiences - yours may be different but that doesn't mean that they, or you interpretation of them, is the one and only truth all must follow. After all you may be a propaganda merchant for all we know.
