Mekong may swell, gov’t says

Featured Replies

Water levels along the Mekong River in Stung Treng, Kratie and Kampong Cham provinces may reach dangerous levels over the next few days, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has warned.

The remnants of Typhoon Rammasun have led to heavy rains in the Mekong River basin of Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, making water levels in the Mekong quickly rise.

“The water level has risen, but it has not reached the alert level yet since the water has not flown into the creeks,” Kratie Provincial Governor Sor Chomrong said.

Last week, Rammasun hit the Philippines, killing nearly 100 people. The storm caused severe congestion in Manila, destroyed many houses in rural areas and damaged infrastructure.

According to the Water Resources Ministry, on July 15, Rammasun also affected Cambodia in coastal areas.

The typhoon has caused rain and strong winds since July 18 and is expected to continue until today.
