Anyone know of any animal charities / shelters in Bangkok?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'm an animal lover (particularly dogs) and want to start volunteering. I feed the stray cats near my apartment daily but want to do more. I've been doing some research and have found PAWS Bangkok. I've messaged them and am awaiting a reply. The other charities that I've found are in other parts of Thailand.

So, can anyone recommend a charity or shelter? Or at least point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

Look at Soi Dog, website www.soidog.org they are also on Facebook.

I've known about these for some time but they are based in Phuket, not Bangkok.

Thanks for this. I have contacted Soi Dog Bangkok. They aren't ready for volunteers yet but they are happy for me to visit to spend time with the dogs and to discuss how I may be able to help in the future.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

If you are feeding strays without getting them neutered then you are not helping, but just making the problem worse.

Wow you have managed to make someone feeding hungry animals sound like a bad thing.

I beg to differ. I am helping the animals. They are hungry, sometimes very hungry. In my area there aren't a huge amount of strays. There's one cat that always hangs around my apartment building and sometimes a few more appear when I'm feeding him. All of the soi dogs are looked after and cared for by the locals and they all seem to live happy lives. I feed the cats because it doesn't seem like as many of the locals do. So, the strays aren't a problem so there isn't a problem for me to be making worse.

Indeed it is a VERY bad thing as you just helping to perpetuated the serious soi dog problem here. Feeding un nuertered animals is highly irresponsible as they breed more and more strays which leads to more suffering and more nuisance. If you are an animal lover you would take them to the vet first. If you are a meat eater of course you cannot claim to be an animal lover anyway, you sound like a naive foreigner to me.

Bangkok need a mass culling of these pests and not the soppy brigade feeding them.

Naive foreigner? Are you Thai?

You are clearly not an animal lover. A mass cull??? Soi dogs are part of the culture here and I don't think locals would agree with you. The soi dogs in my area are looked after and happy. There is no suffering.

We have very different views on life so let's just agree to disagree.

Well if you think diseased ridden mangy soi dogs are 'part of the culture' you can add cockroaches and rats to the list

OP - you will find that you need a work permit for this, even for voluntary work.

I applaud everyone trying to help these dogs, I do so myself, but if you make it formal, you need a work permit.

Glad to hear that you help dogs too :)

I'm full time employed at a school and hold a work permit. I know the permit isn't for charity work but I think the risk is minimal and I'm happy to take it :)

If you have a work permit already, you can add the charity to it, with a little paper work.
