AFTER COUP
Military court to try first civilians

The Nation

30240230-01_big.jpg?1407193071303
Chaturon Chaisang, a former education minister, receives roses from supporters as he arrives at a military court.

Ex-minister Chaturon and academic Worachet freed on bail, vow to fight

BANGKOK: -- Former education minister Chaturon Chaisang and academic Worachet Pakeerat yesterday became the first civilians to be tried in a military court under martial law since the coup after the court's prosecutors resolved to indict them for defying separate orders by the junta.

"I'm disappointed and feel there's injustice against me in many ways," Chaturon, a prominent politician from the former ruling Pheu Thai Party, said at the decision.

He said that he did not consider it necessary to respond to the summons from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) after the power seizure on May 22.

Quest for democracy

He was arrested by armed soldiers at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand on May 27 after holding a press briefing.

He said he went to the FCCT to explain to the public why he had opted not to turn himself in to the NCPO, and that he had no intention of inciting violence but rather wanted peace to be restored in the country.

Chaturon said he and his lawyer were gathering evidence to fight the charges.

"I will continue to be part of the efforts to make this country democratic. I can still [state] opinions honestly as long as they are not against the law or the conditions set by the court," he told reporters after meeting with the martial court's prosecutors.

The prosecutors resolved to press three charges against Chaturon - defying the NCPO's summons, violating martial law or inciting unrest, and breaching the Computer Crime Act.

The offences carry a maximum combined penalty of 14 years in prison and a fine of Bt140,000.

Chaturon had criticised the junta on Facebook before he was nabbed.

The court released him on Bt400,000 bail on condition that he not leave the country without court permission, not participate in political gatherings and not issue opinions with the aim of inciting unrest, his lawyer Narinpong Jinapak said.

The court will schedule Chaturon's arraignment within 30 days, Narinpong said.

Worachet was also released on Bt20,000 bail, his lawyer Winyat Chartmontri said.

The Thammasat University law lecturer, who is a key member of the Nitirat group of academics, was charged with defying two separate NCPO summonses to report to the junta. He could face up to four years' imprisonment if found guilty.

The court set the same conditions for Worachet's release as in Chaturon's case.

Winyat said the defence team would "put on the best fight" and that he would confer with his client about the case.

LIBYA
Thais fleeing chaos in Libya to arrive home tomorrow

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- THE FIRST GROUP of Thai workers evacuated from Libya will arrive in Thailand tomorrow, Employment Department chief Sumet Mohosot said yesterday.

The 18 workers, who were employed by Swiss watch-making company Delma, were scheduled to leave Libya yesterday and arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 12.25pm tomorrow via Dubai.

The number of workers and their arrival time might change depending on vacant seats on the flight, Sumet said, adding that details would be confirmed when the tickets are booked.

His department will send officials to facilitate their re-entry to the country and provide more help if needed.

In Israel meanwhile, Thai labourers have been evacuated from a risky area near the Gaza Strip, the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv reported yesterday.

The embassy said that of the 136 labourers who had asked to be evacuated, 10 were still waiting and 37 had changed their minds.

Junta launches check on anti-military leaflets
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The junta has assigned officials to find who was behind anti-military leaflets distributed in Nonthaburi on Sunday, National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) spokesman Colonel Werachon Sukondhapatipak said yesterday.

He added that feedback about the NCPO had been both positive and negative. In regard to the latter, the NCPO would acknowledge this and seek to improve its work.

Werachon also denied allegations from red shirt Kritsuda Khunasen that she was assaulted while in detention. He said the military knew what was acceptable and what was not when dealing with people. There was no reason for it to do things that would upset the public during this sensitive time.
