I woke up to find almost all of my fish dead this morning, or close to dead. This is in an outside pond.

The only thing out of the ordinary was when my niece turned on the water (the pond leaks, so we need to top it off daily) there seemed to almost be suds forming on the top of the water. I tried running the pump to get rid of water while replacing it, but while it seemed better under the falls, where the hose was feeding it, there were more suds (the pond has two levels, and it was in the lower level where the hose was feeding the pond.

Has this happened to anyone? Any idea of what could have caused this?

I get these so called suds on my fish pond after topping up[ours 3,000]lts] and have lost fish in the past,i have put it down to acid rain, but 3month ago there was a lot of chorine in the tap water and it killed half of mine[7fish]

so I got some RQ CONTRACT CHLORINE which neutralizes chlorine and chloramine for fresh water, also nautratizes iron and copper, makes tap water fish safe, since I used this I havnt lost a fish in one pond and one tank.

it comes in 120ml.plastic white/red bottles enough to treat 1500lts. I use half bottle if I empty the pond.price from fish stores

is 35bht.

You need to store/hold the water for at least 24 hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate before putting it in the pond.

Lets hope its not acid rain as Thailand is in close proximity to Fukushima .I hope its a localised water problem, as stated previously chlorine kills freshwater fish.

having been a big freshwater fisherman in the uk.I have seen what acid rain done to the trout on big lakes and res.es.

like flipping oil slicks.our water is supplied by the tessaban but that's no guarantee, its not long ago the water got contaminated and killed thousands of fish here in korat, the cause came from an ice making factory,so they say.

as there has been a shortage they will get it from anywhere,so then they have to use a lot of chlorine.

You should test the PH.

Is this town water or untreated?

It is town water, but we've been using it for a year without issue. We only have (had) the hardier breeds such as carp and plecostomus and a few odds and ends. The plecostomus are still alive, but all the carp have died. The cat helped one of them move on, but I think that's because it was slowed down by the water quality.

One time last years i lost all my fish and could not for the life of me figure out what happened , then a few days later I was talking to the old lady down the street with Ciejay translating and see told her that one of the neighbors had gone up and down both sides of the road and sprayed pesticides and weed killer and that the whole area smelt bad for hours , sure enough I went and tasted a little water from my pond and it had chemical taste to it , check and see if anyone has been spraying in your area . By the way I went to the neighbors house and ask him to please not spray near my house , i would control the weeds my self and give me time to cover my pond with plastic , I've had to do it once when he sprayed and never lost a fish this time, I fill my pond with water from the village and It never needs enough to bother the fish and I also have a set up on one of my rain gutters with a hose that I will put in the pond when it rains and if it overflows for a bit it helps clean he pond a little. Chlorine is the most likely culprit but it doesn't form suds. The suds could be protein in the water or maybe your niece wanted a bubble bath.
