Thailand Tour Pleasure cum Business

Dear All

I am from Sri Lanka and I have visited Thailand Three times before (Bangkok, Ayuththaya and Pattaya) and love the country due to rich and diverse culture and food and planning to visit Thailand (mainly Bangkok and may be Chiang Mai too) during September this year and wish to stay about one week.

During my previos visits, I was in full holiday mood fully focussed on travel, pleasure and food and this time wish to incorporate some business ideas too as i know many people from my country are doing it. My aim is to generate some side income that will enable me to visit Thailand more frequently.

I mainly wish to buy garment items and would like to know best places with lowest prices for whole sale (starting from 3,6,12 pieses) of quality garments.

I love Thai wood carvings and other curios and already have a good collection, purchased from malls and tourist shops. This time I wish to directly visit some manufaaacturers' workshopa, expecting better prices and bulk purchases.

So, Dear Friends, please help me in this regard and help me to enjoy Thailand in more depth and more frequently.

Cheers

For garments, I'd try Pratunam market in Bangkok. There are lots of businesses from the sub-continent in that area so I'm sure you'd find a fellow Sri Lankan to help you find your way around. As for other curios/wood carvings etc. Chiang Mai may have the answer: there's a village called Ban Tawai about 12Km's south of town that does all manner of wooden handicrafts and objects d'art. Their prices aren't as low as they once were, but there are still some bargains if you scout around

Well I'm no expert, but I would say that Indra market is a retail market that will do wholesale deals whereas Pratuman is a wholesale market that will do retail deals. I would think that many of the businesses are related though and the days of really cheap deals in Thailand are long over. The other thing to bear in mind is that a Thai will almost always get a better deal than a foreign looking face, so it might be an idea to find a Thai negotiator.

Aybowan, but frankly&bluntly-for you, from SL, its no use going to TH for cheap clothes-India offers far more choice and much lower prices. And cheap means low quality.

Obviously a big city like BKK is pretty low on factories for woodcarving and the like-but there is a specific area where they do some work (mostly for houses-doors, balconie frames, etc.) and do far more resell-at Thai prices IF you can get them. THis is near the BangSue train/MRT station, between the Nonthaburird and the Riverside, roughly soi 90+. Its pretty obvious from even a bus when you hit this area. Also gardening centres/markets offer an awful lot of it-but these are very far out of centre town.

Why it is not that cheap? MIN wage in TH is now 300 bt=10US$/day. So items with much work in them, cannot be very cheap-anymore, compared to much poorer countries.

HI, Thanks for the detailed reply, I am not focusing purely on business, just wanted to supplement my expenses.

Thanks again,
