BANGKOK: -- There are few things which terrify middle class-and-up Bangkokians like vocational school students.

So netizens took great delight in two videos uploaded Tuesday showing army soldiers shaking down teenage students, from which they appear to seize several long, ugly looking blades.

A couple dozen students were ordered off a public bus near the Bang Na intersection by soldiers who then discovered the shivs while searching their bags, recounts the Bangkok Post. [read more...]

There was a truck waiting to take them away apparently so perhaps some tales were told for the military to target that particular bus.

Being that these kids are carrying weapons already to fight against other students then an army conscript is exactly what they need. Removal from their schools where rivalry is taught to the point it drove these kids to be in this predicament already.
Give them discipline, self respect, and self worth through army training. They need to be removed from society before they kill someone.

I don't believe in armies or, therefore, conscription.  However there is no flaw in your logic.  If these idiots think they are tough and are willing to fight with weapons then give them the opportunity.  A 2 year "holiday" to the South to play their part in this governments "home-made" war will show them how tough they really are.

Well they weren't born this way. The culture sucks them in and we all know about peer pressure as teenagers. I've met plenty of kids like this here thru my own kids ..they do things in groups that they wouldn't do as individuals. I can't see any prospect of change here in the current top down climate. There are programs in the states that I've seen and participated in that take kids from jails and juvenile homes for a 10 day on site program where kids get some pretty good insights into how why and what got them where they are. The results reduced recidivism about 80 - 90% and actually turned a lot of kids lives around. Give kids a better alternative to the endless mindless tribal gang mentality and they'll take it if it's presented in a way that makes sense to them. Not all but many of them will.

Unfortunately the issue isn't as simple as taking their weapons away.  They have them to defend against the students of others schools (and to wage their own attacks).  Take away their weapons and they're defenceless next time they get attacked.

At 0:33 you can see that fattie is throwing something over the lower wall, after which two soldiers glean over it, then apparently ordering Mr Portly to retrieve whatever he had tried to discard.

I am not sure about the name "Shivs" for the home made blades, but In prisons across the USA, they would be called "Shanks". 

Used to be standard for military govts to go after thugs from vocational schools.  During FM Thanom's dictatorship in the early 70s he ordered the summary execution of a vocational student who shot dead a middle aged woman on a bus with a home made pen gun, which became a cause celebre just like the rape and murder of the little girl on the train that has got sexy actresses out threatening to execute rapists.  It is in the ghosted autobiography of the last shooting executioner that has just been made into a film.  The student was still protesting that his mother was an influential person who was going to get him out of jail free as they were strapping him to the execution post, just two or three weeks after the murder.  The threat of summary execution was a great way for police to extract confessions and get suspects to grass on accomplices. 

 

It's funny that the army is able and willing to tackle this perennial problem but the police never bothers.  All too often the worst student thugs are policemen's sons who are never charged.  One of them murdered my brother-in-law's best friend for fun in front of many witnesses years ago and is still a free man today.  Sadly things will revert to normal as soon as a civilian govt takes over.

They wouldn't be "kids like this" if they were in the military.

I was at Central Bangna a few years ago when security rounded up about 20 of these little shits. They emptied their bags and pockets onto a table and it looked like a medieval battle set, knives, cleavers, and scythes were plied up on the table. Apparently the parents were just called to take the kids home and that was that.

 

I used to get the 132 bus and they would pile on, intimidate the passengers and often refuse to pay, maybe that's what they did here?
