Insurgents incite unrest in South

Bu7Mk7dCYAENVsi-wpcf_728x413.jpg

YALA: -- Southern insurgents set off two home made bombs, burnt car tyres, and sprayed red paints on highway in Yala province Wednesday night in a new round of violence after the Ramadan fast.

Security officials said insurgents sprayed red paints on several locations of Highway 418 from Yala to Pattani and Highway 409 from Yala to Ban Nieng in Rumi dialect which reads “Pattani Merdika” and burnt car tyres on the islands in the middle of two highways.

All traffic signs in both areas were also sprayed and destroyed by the Muslim insurgents.

Alerted security officials rushed to the areas with armoured cars and check points were set up to check all passing vehicles to hunt the insurgents.

A public telephone booth in Yaha district on Highway 4065 from Ban Nieng to Yaha was damaged when a homemade bomb planted inside exploded at about 9.00 p.m. Wednesday night.

Another bomb planted at an abandoned road check-point near Sam Yaek Ban Nieng market was also detonated almost at the same time.

Car tyres were also burnt at several locations on the new Lammai bypass road.

Lammai station police rushed to inspect the area and searched suspected targets in bid to hunt the insurgents and their elements for prosecution.

'Insurgents', such a harmless, pleasant-sounding word, protesting about wanting their own state!!!     All they are trying to do is kill and maim civilians!!    They are 'terrorists'!!!!!!

Insurgents also tends to describe them as if they are not Thai.  Perhaps that is the intention, on the basis that "Thai people would not behave like this."  How many of them that are caught are from other countries or have no Thai I.D.?

If the goal of all this indiscriminate damage & bloodshed is self rule by Sharia law or any form of separatism on an (Islamic) religious basis, then I have no problem with calling them "Islamic terrorists."    Cultural sensitivites be damned.

It has been reported that the Junta has acknowledged that the movement in the deep south is not a religious one but separatist in nature.

For anyone who is interested clues can be found in the events of November 1786, the Burney Treaty 1826, and the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, and the Thai cultural mandates of Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram during his first period as Prime Minister and military dictator of Thailand.

I feel that the separatists are committing a type of genocide against Thai people and believe this movement is not being covered by the international news media for the same reasons I dare not post more about it here.

Unrest hardly seems the correct word for bombing and killing.

As has already been pointed out terrorism is a lot closer to the truth.

Why is it taking Thailand so long to deal with these people?...the unrest in the South is over 10 years old now and hundreds of innocent people have been killed by Muslim separatist...who do not value life...

Do a military sweep of the area...clean out their hiding places...confiscate their arms...destroy their leadership...and repeat over and over until the people who do nor respect other people's right to exist and enjoy life...are totally destroyed...run out of the country...and afraid to return...

Forget the vendors on the beach...go South young Thai soldier...go South...

Looking at the history of the region, it is no wonder there is Muslim insurgency. And it has nothing to do with terrorism associated with Muslims as carried out in the Middle East.

The three provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (plus parts of Satun and Songkhla) originally belonged to a Malay Muslim sultanate. In 1909 buddhist Siam invaded and annexed the region in 1909. The 1.8 million Malay Muslims there today constitute the majority population and want to regain control over their lives without what they see as suppression by Buddhism and imperialism. To that end those Malay Muslims in the region who actively oppose the Thailand rule whether by peaceful or violent means become “insurgents.” Thailand’s position has never waivered from maintaining absolute Thai sovereignty over those people through military and police actions. Until Thailand’s rulers consider less direct governance of the region, it faces eventual consolidation of the Muslim insurgent factions and increasing coordinated violence to dissolve Thailand’s governance. The Junta’s Happiness Concerts are not going to work in the South.

too bad this is not big new in the western media,   might see some changes if it was

Not even big news in Thailand. Googling "Pattani News" or "Yala News" or the like will bring up numerous incidents that aren't reported here on TV, such as 4 soldiers killed in two bombs over the last week in Yala. I guess life is just cheap.

I have no such information. I merely point out that the word INsurgents usually means they came "IN" from somewhere. Another Country?  Another Province?  I wonder if that is a simple mistaken mis-use of the term or done deliberately to shift blame away from Thais doing unseemly things to Thais in this LOS.  Possibly you think it IS Thais, albeilt religious minority Thais.  I have no opinion other than to question the reason for the use of the word "insurgents."  I thought that was quite clear in my post.  In fact I asked the same question you asked me.  Please read the post before you play the "please provide a source/link" card.

They are the Same as Somalia PIRATES and should be treated as such.

They do not do this for religion - they do it for Greed, Power and Control.

(But unlike Somalians - most are Not poor)
