Prayuth instructs officials to get tough with young street racers

BANGKOK: -- National Council for Peace and Order chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said Friday night that he had instructed police and relevant agencies to crack down on teenagers who raced on streets.

He said he has received reports that teenagers often raced on Rama 4 Road in Bangkok's Khlong Toei district.

He said police and other officials were ordered to implement measures to prevent the loss in life because of street racing.

The street races were going on for years and 'cracked down' regularly, even when we 'only' had the regular laws.

That suggests these kids do not respect laws and / or have an attitude problem.

true. Total disregard and disrespect of "civilised behavior" but hey thats not unique to "kids" in LOS

We have some of the toughests laws in the world in Australia for hoons and still they street race ,do donuts ect but teenagers are teenagers the world over no matter what law prevails . Only age and experience will eventually calm the exuberance of these kids down . Sometimes as we get older we forget what we did in our teens .

Parents and school Teachers should indicate the > do's and don'ts < about the life-styles of teenagers and kids in order to prevent those unacceptable street activities.

I live near the Kor Sor resort in the Bofhai district of Hua Hin. We have a very well maintained and straight road, around 1 km long. This road strip is frequently used by young boys who have speed competitions with their modified motorcycles. And no helmets or other safety gadgets. Flip flops and short pants are the standard wearable.

The mostly drive in speeds over 100 km/h. Not only people, also animals such as dogs, cats etc are in the risk of being run overed by these young "wanna be racing champions". I hope the local authorities will make road bumps as soon as possible. Otherwise someone will die soon...

In KL, Malaysia an ex-racer told me the prize was a girl for the night. Does anyone know the prizes to be won in Bangkok?

A lady boy for the night for the winner.  Two lady boys for the night for second place.giggle.gif

Stupid comment. Why involve ladyboys in this matter. They allready have a lot of shit from ignorant people to deal with. Respect for gods sake.

I've seen the same. No BIB to be seen and no one seems to care that Beach Road has seen several pedestrians killed by cycles in recent months.

Traffic enforcement is lacking in Pattaya. No radar, no speed cameras, no speed limit signs, no motorcycle patrols (125cc don't count), and no patrol cars with radios (pickups not included).

They are quite efficient stopping and fining people on scooters without helmets.

Better punishment might be cleaning up intensive care wards at hospitals. Friend's wife (who died, thanks to bad driving by government official) was in ward for a week before she died in Chonburi Hospital. It  was (and no doubt still is) full of horribly damaged people due to bad/reckless driving. Let them see the results of stupidity they embrace.

Why not involve Ladyboys? Why do ladyboys feature so heavily on Thai TV? Cuz' everyone loves ladyboys....No amount of "getting tough" is gonna stop your dedicated street racer....crackdowns such as this cannot be maintained in the long term....as soon as the cat is away, the mice come back out play....

What I'd really like to see is no holds barred, combat tuk-tuk racing around Sanam Luang....that would be a winner for tourism.

And just who is going to enforce this "crackdown"? We live within earshot of Putthamonton Sai 2 and have had a number of 2AM race meetings which are facilitated by the police. Traffic lights along the Sai are locked green for the length of the strip and local un-uniformed police have been recognised attending the race by neighbours in the mooban.

... of course not,  unless any law is enforced,  it will make no difference if under martial law or not.           At least the Junta seems to be more inclined in enforced laws.

Eventually the street racers are relieved of their vehicles, later unfortunately than sooner.

Perhaps Thai street racers should have their vehicles taken off them immediately and not given back - crushed would be a good idea. Do you think that others may then understand?

Having been a teenager once myself, my love was my car and/or motorcycle. I would hate to not have them. I took to racing them on a circuit in races. The bullsh*t stops when the flag drops! Maybe a tough concept that for motormouths.

Edit: Grammar

My apologies to all the ladyboys, if any, reading this topic.  I quite enjoy the humor of some LBs and have one in my extended family. They are more open and less sensitive about their gender and manner than you seem to be. There was no malice or ill intent in my, admittedly rather glib, comment.

"I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my katoey gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my katoey gently weeps"

thats true but when we did it we didnt do it in built up areas where others could be hurt/injured. These idiots dont care who else is involved as long as they get their kicks, time for the police to seize their vehicles/bikes and put them in the compactor then give them back as litlle square blocks, that will definitely stop them.

I have to wonder what 'get tough' means in the Thai army. Anyone on TV have access to Thai conscripts' stories of 'get tough' treatment in basic training ?
