Hi,

I am leo from Holland and will retire in 2016, married in holland to a Thai wife for over 16 years.

Intend to emigrate to Thailand as soon i retire :)

I know that i have to get a 3 month o-visum in Holland and than ask for a marriage extension for a year in Thailand,

I got the following advice from a friend who already lives in Thailand with his Thai wife for over 6 years.

" legalizing marriage papers in the Netherlands is a hassle at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thai Embassy in The Hague.

Upon arrival in Thailand, got to the Dutch embassy and get under presentation of your Dutch marriage papers an explanation to enter into a marriage in Thailand, cost a 1220 baht.

ask for an income statement, cost 1220 baht
Annual statement of the previous year is sufficient, if necessary a statement in English..
If I'm not mistaken, you can do use the annual statement as the month specification.

Then go with yours wife to the amphur and get married there for the cost of 150 baht.

Will get Kor Ror 2 and 3, than reply for an extension of stay."

I want to know if this information is correct ?

That would technically be the same as being married twice which is not truly legal.

What you should do is go to the embassy and do a self certification of your marriage certificate by doing a statement that it is true and correct. Then you take that and your marriage certificate to a translator and have them translated to Thai. Then have the translation certified by the Ministry of Foreign affairs (translator can get this done for you).

After that you go to an Amphoe and register your marriage. They will then issue a Kor Ror 22 foreign marriage registry that will be needed at immigration along with the translation of your marriage certificate.

Sounds right, not thought about being married twice to the same wife :)

So i must get a certified translation of my dutch marriage papers in holland.

Are there any other papers that need to be certified translations to obtain a marriage extension in thailand ?

You can have your marriage certificate translated here. You will do the certification at the Dutch embassy here.

Just you marriage certificate translation for the extension. You might want to get two translations certified by the MFA in case the Amphoe insists on keeping the one you get.

When you register yout marriage they will also update your house book and give your wife the option of taking your name on her ID card.

The other option is retirement extension

Requires more money in the bank, but less paperwork. correct me if I'm wrong Ubonjoe as you are the go to guy here.

The difference in financial proof is significant.

Marriage 400k baht in the bank verses 800k.

Income of 40k baht verses 65k baht.

The extra paperwork and the extra trip to immigration after 30 days is not enough is not enough for me to do the retirement extension. I just did my 7th application for an extension based upon marriage 2 weeks ago.

Don't forget a map of your residence, the pictures of you and your wife. IIRC, there may be a few others, tabien baan, photocopies of EVERY page of your passport (even the blank ones), photos of yourself, etc.

Here in Phuket, a marriage extension gets you a one month temporary extension. After one month you go back and get the remaining 11 months.

I just don't want you to be disappointed by not having all the stuff

have to go for the marriage extension :)

got about 55000 income wen retire !

my wife has her own income from holland (disablety money now and get pension wen gets 67)

intend to save up money in thai bank to change after a few years to retirement extension.

do you know?

if your income is 55.000 monthly, you would only need 140.000 in your Thai bank account for getting the retirement extension

800.000 - (12 x 55.000)=140.000

and for this mixed procedure, no need to have it in the account 3 month before!

(no problem with extension in case of divorce ;) )

Do you have to get the Income letter from the Embassy translated also, as well as the Affirmation ?

The affirmation letter must be translated into Thai, for the Thai MFA and the amphur. The income letter generally does not need to be translated and is not requested by them.

Immigration accepts documents in English.
