AnotherOneAmerican Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I suspect the issue is the "for life" part In that case, I can predict he will be PM for life or until ousted by force. (Or promoted to a position he considers more important than PM) 2
Popular Post Thailand Posted August 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2014 Those of you in denial that the country has already taken the difficult turn for the better should perhaps at least bite ones tongues. Things can only get better and we should positively look forwards to new elections next year without the participation of the corrupt dinosaurs and their brethren from both sides of the political divide. ASEAN together with new elections will transform Thailand.... In the fullness of time. Usually when a general elects himself PM for life, things only get worse. Could you suggest any country where this happened and things got better? A lie. a real one at that---the General did not elect himself PM-for life. could you post something that is not a porky pie. But he certainly can if he wants to, that's what absolute power means is it not? 4
Ragzilb Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Well I love it, so far he has done more than any former PM has done so far. Congratz PM Prayuth

Well, we could say, persuaded 191 people he appointed to vote for him as only candidate at gunpoint. If you prefer, but that would be a little pedantic. Yes when you don't have any opposition or worries about public opinion , not to mention control of the armed forces , its easy peasy lemon squeezey 1

junk1e Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 However he was elected have no doubt that when we look back will say he was the most effective Prime Minister for positive change in Thailand ever. From the many Thais I have spoken to, if there was an election tomorrow and he stood as a candidate would win hands down, unless of course Thaksin managed to buy enough votes to defeat him. No doubt if this happened that the "democracies" in the West would applaud it as democracy in action. Wake up America and Europe, Thailand has not had a real democracy for years and the NCPO is trying to create a situation where it will be possible in the future. 2
chotthee Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 elected the wrong word Who elected him? Not the people of Thailand. I can assure that 200 people (mostly generals) are all PEOPLE OF THAILAND.

lensta Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 "He got unanimous 191 votes by the National Legislative assembly". Wow, that's a surprise!!

Wake up America and Europe, Thailand has not had a real democracy for years and the NCPO is trying to create a situation where it will be possible in the future. The only economic decisions, taken on his behalf by his economic czar Prajin Juntong, have been to basically extend Yingluck's tax cuts and promise to re-launch some of her government's infrastructure plans and little else. The economy barely avoided technical recession. tourist numbers, despite misleading headlines, are down. The most effective PM it will take more than a couple beach clean ups. As for creating a situation where real democracy will be possible in the future, everybody hopes so, but when you look at the interim constitution voted in July and the plans for the permanent one, it doesn't look like it's going that way at all. 1

The interim constitution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_interim_constitution_of_Thailand) does not have a specific end date. Other constitutions specify timeframes for elections - the US is on a fixed schedules and many other parliements are capped at 5 years but generally occur within 4. The interim constitution specified timeframes for a new constitution, but with absolute veto power by the NCPO. So, PM for life is within the scope of the interim constitution. 2

The only way for it to 'go that way at all' is for complete personal financial transparency, and a maintained one at that, in order to display one's own work is as honest as one portrays. That may lead to permanence and trust. Until then, none of use have one iota of knowledge about what is really happening behind the visual actions and 'scenes' we are presented with.
heybruce Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 The BBC has a decent summary of the situation, I'm sure other news sites have, or will have, as well. Better read them quick before they are blocked. 1

The general is not going to like that article one bit "The vote... was the kind of rushed acclamation favoured by dictatorships and communist parties of old. In just 15 minutes, 191 out of 194..." 2
Popular Post brewsterbudgen Posted August 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2014 When Prayuth is elected by a majority of the Thai people he will have my support. It's sad to see so many supporting a military junta. 4
muntergok Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I´m beginning to understand what " Democracy Thai style" means. I hope nobody asks him difficult questions as PM as he does not like that . 2
mataleo Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 "The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the vote in Parliament was little more than a formality, lasting just 15 minutes, as Gen Prayuth was the only candidate."
