BANGKOK, Aug 23 -- Resolving pressing problems in Thailand after the formation of an interim government will be tackled by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), which seized power on May 22, said NCPO leader and army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Speaking during his weekly televised address late Friday, Gen Prayuth, who will become a new prime minister as he awaits royal endorsement, said the NCPO and the interim government will jointly consider which problems would be resolved by each body.

Some pressing problems such as corruption, boosting the country’s competitiveness, solving poverty problem in short-term, narcotics, natural resources encroachment, etc. may have to use “special authority” in dealing with them, he said.

“There will no complexity in solving problems [by both],” said Gen Prayuth.

Regarding the ongoing screening of people applying for membership on the National Reform Council (NRC), he said between 600 to 700 candidates have already applied in Bangkok till now.

Eventually, only 173 persons would be chosen, plus 77 others representing each of the 77 provinces throughout the country and they will be tasked with reforming 11 issues in the country, he said.

Gen Prayuth said he would chair a first meeting of the committee to select NRC members on September 4. The entire process is to be completed on September 22. (MCOT online news)

"Some pressing problems such as corruption,"

Hardly the definition of a pressing problem. This has been a problem for 70 years.

At last something seems to finally be getting done to solve

Thailand 's woes,Politicians who needs them,as they were

the major creators of most of the problems, and never seemed

to get anything done, unless it benefited themselves.

Nobody can do miracles, but since may 22nd the military government has done much more good than happened in the past decade. Now there must be follow-up on both the big (huge rice scheme corruption) and the small (parking obstructing traffic) problems. They can't do all the same time.

So far some beaches are clean as they should be, a big bad guy got 20 years in jail. Many corrupt officials are removed, illegally built villa's in national parks are seized and demolished, heaps of guns and grenades were seized, quite a few terrorist thugs arrested for attacking the protestors, the plot leading to a foreign leader/financer is getting uncovered, the taxi scammers in Pukhet are laying low and much, much more has been done in THREE MONTHS ONLY.

It makes one wonder how ignorant and arrogant people can be to complain and condemn the current government only, without aknowledging they do heaps and heaps of good stuff. Shame on those morons!

Much more is to be done. The big shots of the corrupt previous governments MUST be put in prison. The process will be long and at times painful, there will be setbacks too. But things are on the move. And that's what it is all about.

Well said Eric

It is obvious these 6-700 people in BKK understand the problems in Surin, Yala and all the provinces much better than the people who live there, since after all, the BKK people are just better of, course. Being a successful McDonald's and KFC mogul is very important, obviously shows that such incredible leaders can be diplomats, economists and even historians. They might even make better doctors and engineers too!

It should be obvious to everyone that a car dealer in Chonburi is smarter than some Yala rubber plantation worker, and that a former member of the tourism industry understands the problems in Ayutthaya better than the natives. and that a former media mogul understands growing rice better than some stupid farmer from Pichit. Ask anyone but those stupid teachers, those academics who have their noses in books and facts, and everyone will tell you it is all fine and dandy.

Hallelujah! The truth is finally here!

You need to have more faith. Don't doubt the ability of a bunch of career semi-retired soldiers, and their assorted cadre of Bangkok cronies, to address all the social and economic problems that Thailand faces. Fixing these problems has never been tried before, so I'm sure that they'll be successful.

You'd better fix your avatar. The Ministry of Happiness won't like it.

Many of the issues he discusses are more of a "national" problem as opposed to a "local" problem. Encroachment, government red tape, drugs, etc. And let's not forget, many of these come from places outside Bangkok. So they know the local issues very well.

I'm sure you are joking. It's not possible for anyone to be this thick.

Some pressing problems such as corruption. It has been the way of life in Thailand for a long time so much so that it has become the system that population live buy. It will be a long road to re educate the Thai population to live without corruption the NCPO has made a start but can they see it throw? Or is this just a whitewash.

Corruption is truly engrained within all aspects of the Thai Culture and is as normal as passing gas and has a similar impact with the community at large in that it is accepted as the Thai way.

Democracy has also escaped this nation . The Thai's are very good at claiming that they have something owing to a thought process without taking any actions.

If this new administration is going to deliver then they need to change from this happiness for the people rubbish and develop a more tangible mantra for real change. It will not happen simply because they say it will. Strong, exemplary and transparent leadership is required and this can not be obtained by trying to be nice to the people and seeking popularity from communities that have little idea as to the macro view if any at all.

The isolationism practiced in Thailand for so may years and the doctrine that Thai's are "special" has brought this country to where it is today, which s a question that the whole population needs to ask itself . More of the same will not save this country from it's past recalcitrance. True solutions can not be garnered by appeasement, smoke and mirrors and populist policies. This new administration should provide what the country needs and not what it wants. As they say ,you can not make omelet's without breaking eggs.

Hm, a short term solution for poverty. Please enlighten us how this quick fix works.

It maybe so obvious, but since I'm a bit dense at times, could you please explain why it's so obvious?

BTW can you only register in Bangkok or just in any of the provinces?
