Getting an ED visa in thai consulate in Tokyo?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get info about the Thai consulate in Tokyo without any luck.

I am a french citizen, 31yo.

I have all the paperwork from the school ready and i do have to go to Tokyo from september 1st to 15th no matter if i can or cannot apply for an Ed visa there.

I am in in thailand at the moment and will fly to Tokyo from here.

First question that is not clear at all on the Tokyo Thai consulate: as a non-japanese resident, can i even apply for any visa?

  • non-Japanese applicant holding passports of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestinian State, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria and Yemen cannot apply for any category of visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo, unless the applicant acquires permanent resident / mid-to long-term / specific visa to legally reside in Japan.
  • foreigners residing in Japan on specific visa such as permanent resident, long term resident, spouse or child of Japanese citizen, or student, are required to submit additional documents for each category of visa. Please click visa category below for further information.

If yes, has anyone ever done it there?

Among the requirement, they ask to have a Japanese guarantor AND a thai guarantor, a "original letter of recommendation from the educationnal institute in Japan" (???), full bank statement and lease contract of appartment in Thailand.

Over the past 3 years i've been living in Thailand, i've learned to not ask things like "why would they need a Japanese guarantor to get an ed visa for Thailand" but instead ask if they really do need these. If i show bank statements from bank in France and in Thailand with way more money than the requirements, do i still need guarantors?

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated

In practice that means that the embassy or consulate in Japan does not issue visa to non-Japanese unless they legally live there.

You can try anyway but I don't think they will issue the visa. In that case you will have to get your ED visa issued somewhere else, e.g. Laos, Malaysia.

From reading that I did prior to a Tokyo visit earlier this year, I think it's a no go unless you are a Japanese resident. And you will need an appointment; they don't take walk-ins,

I booked an appointment on their website

Can't hurt to give it a shot since you will be there for a couple weeks (and already have an appointment) but I would recommend that you have a Plan B ready. smile.png

I'd just loose 9000yen :P

Mostly likely, if they have a bit of decency, they will not accept your application at all.

Personally I do not like to ask for what I know I will not be given.

It won't get that far if residency is truly the issue it appears to be.

if rain gear, sure high viz anyway as environment is darker when it is raining.

and study posted says for urban environment high viz is better.

contrast plays a role but percentage of overall benefit at all conditions, high viz is better still it looks like high viz green is not good for a forest road same for a high viz yellow on sunny desert road etc.

As a resident in Japan and a frequent long time user of the Thai embassy there I think it is very unlikely that you will get a visa there. For every visa application I've had to show my Japanese alien registration card.

Don't forget that the fee is for the application now not the visa. However you will probably be lucky and have your application refused to be accepted so you won't pay the fee, a bit better than than paying the fee then being refused the visa. I have seen a few people have there application refused because of missing or incorrect documents.

And yes however much money you have in any bank you still need the Japanese guarantor.

AFIK you would be better advised to take a trip to Korea as the embassy there seems to be far less restrictive.

I've seen the website but i thought they could be flexible.

Looks like i'll have to apply somewhere else when i come back from Japan. I don't think i'll have problem getting back to Thailand on a visa exempt.
