When can you apply for an extension?

Featured Replies

I am arriving in Thailand with a 60 day tourist visa. I have been told I can apply for a 30 day extension. When can I apply for this extension? Can I apply immediately after arrival or do I have to wait until it has almost expired?

Some immigration offices will do it even immediately after your arrival, others only within the last four weeks. There's no rhyme or reason to this.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I did this just once but it was a couple of years ago in Bangkok.

I went directly to immigration and converted my visa to a non-O. Then I was told I had to wait until at least 15 days, but not more than 30 days was left on my visa to get the extension. In the meantime I got all of the picky paperwork together for the extension.

I'd get the non-O and immediately make my bank deposit if I was going that route. I believe the seasoning time is less for a first time arrival but I wouldn't push my luck. I went the income route so I'm not sure.

I didn't have to do anything out of country. Everything I needed could be done in country.

YMMV.

OP question is about extending a Tourist visa for 30 days, not converting and getting an extension for retirement.

Thank you for your replies! That is correct, it is for an extension not a conversion. The conversion will be next trip.
