Drugs, porn found in temple raid

CHON BURI: Authorities arrested a monk and a layman and seized weapons, drugs and pornographic DVDs from a Buddhist temple in Si Racha district today (August 26).

A team of police and military officers raided Wat Huay Prab in Moo 3 village of Tambon Bor Win in the afternoon. The operation came after residents complained to district chief Wichai Sampantharat that monks at the temple allegedly consumed methamphetamines.

Phra Yuthana and Sitthasak Sriboon, a layman working as a driver at the monastery, tested positive for use of methamphetamines and were taken into custody.

Police combed all of the monks' rooms and found five methamphetamine pills, porn movies, 14 knives, a home-made .38 pistol, a .22 calibre rifle and several BB guns, along with .45 and .38 ammunition. They also discovered drug paraphernalia in the temple's basement.

Officers tested 21 monks and novices, finding two had used drugs.

Abbot Phra Kru Paisarn Santitham was at a religious ceremony in Ratchaburi when authorities raided the premises. Officials were questioning the monks how they obtained all the illegal items.

Quite evident some are not ready to be monks. Majority of monks are sincere, but Thai culture is such that young men become short term monks for 3 months because of family pressure and status, I know sometimes becoming a monk is alternative to going to jail for crimes. I am sure there are more reasons for joining that have nothing to do with actual intention of leading monastic life. Pity.

It is a Thai custom that every man should become a monk for at least 3 months before he marries. Now today not many are following this anymore, but from the ones who do not many are 'voluntarily' becoming a monk, but just follow reluctantly what family/society expects from them. Many (if not most) abbots are not ready to be an abbot and to take care of these short-time monks and on top of that many of these temples harbour more long-term monks who are definitely not diligent practitioners but guys who don't know where else to go and want to lead a lazy life. So don't be surprised if we find out that they are more or less leading the same life as before.

No different to England then. a lot of Monks are ex criminals doing penance for there sins.

Next time could you get your pet Hamster to reply cos it would certainly make more sense than you.

I have to agree with Thongkorn....

I've been told that many become Monks because they have problems with Drug and sex addiction.

What he says makes sense to me.

Discuss that with your hamster, please.

BTW. I do respect some Monks..

.but I look at many as nothing but beggars and scammers in orange robes. Giving envelopes to dirt poor farmer's wives and making them feel guilty if they do not give them money....... when they live much better than the farmer's families...it's disgusting!

Almost as discusting as giving any religion tax exempt status...This crap is big business. They sell dreams. Low overhead and huge profit.

I say " Tax the HELL out of religions!"

7 years ago 2 of my wife`s male cousins 1 in his 40s and the other early 50s and had no particular trade skills were laid off from their jobs and became unemployed. After 2 years they were unsuccessful in finding employment or permanent jobs. Both their wives were working and financially supporting their husbands and children, life became an absolute struggle for them.

Eventually due to the financial hardships involved both my wife`s cousins became monks as due to circumstances saw no other options for them. 1 joined a temple in Bangkok and the other cousin ended up in a remote wat in the mountains somewhere and are still there to this day.
