I will be in the south for a while and I will need to do a border run (activate my second entry)

which is the better option out of ranong/myanmar or one of the malaysian crossings?

thanks

Which one are you close to, and how do you travel?

From both there are reports that they occasionally raise difficulties.

I will be based in the krabi area, so they can both be done in a day by minivan, or a more expensive option is to fly to kl

I've also heard of people having problems at both places, but I'm thinking that's more to do with visa exemption stamps?

has anyone done a land border run lately? i.e. activated a second or third entry at ranong or the malaysian border?

Someone activating a second entry at Sadao was asked to spend a night in Malaysia.

Others that took the train had no problems.

You should be ok there and in ranong as well, but carry Bt 20,000 cash.

can you explain taking the train please, ie from where to where?

I may just fly from krabi to KL and return the same day as it's only 2500 baht promotion price

The international train leaves from Hat Yai. Tickets can be bought online.

If you get off at the first Malay stop you may have to wait a long time for a train going back.

I don't know more than that, recent reports are lacking in details.

I'm not sure if this will help the OP, however there is a minivan service from within walking distance of the train station in Hat Yai to the border at Danok. It costs approximately 100 baht. At the border one can use a motorcycle taxi to go across the bridge. It is too far to walk comfortably in the hot sun.

While I agree it may be a bit too far to walk between immigration shacks in the hot sun, I have never seen a bridge there.

rent a car and head down to Wang Prachan ,( its outside Satun.) nice ride down from Krabi, small border so no hassles ( unlike Sadao)

about 3 hours from Krabi on secondary roads.

Satun is a nice town to spend the night as well

I think they have banned border runs for out/in same day. Worth an overnight in KL shopping trip, otherwise o/i is written in passport maybe.

OP ... I am in Ao Nang Krabi, and will be for another two months at least. About two months ago I made a border run to the Thale Ban National Park ... (the border check points there). It was a no hassle deal - but of course I am on a Non Imm. 'O'.

These particular Thai and Malaysian checkpoints were very nonchalant ... There were many border run vans there... I had rented a car and drove there from Ao Nang with some friends. I wrote an entire long post on the details - I'l dig it up and post a link here soon. Another good feature about the Thale Ban destination it is a bit further the west away from any potential trouble spots.

I am going to make another border run there around September 19th. (my have to date is the 22nd.)

I chose to drive versus taking a border run van as I hate the Kamikazi drivers who overload the vans. It was an all day trip of about 300 k one way.

What is your time table ? I can go as early as September 15 or so as I have a multi-entry 'O' and it makes little difference as to when I go...

By the way.. There are many van services from the general Krabi area - run around 1000 Baht.

Also - OP ... I could go for the Ranong crossing but the idea of getting on a boat to Myanmar does not thrill me. And the distance to Ranong from Ao Nang / Krabi is about the same as going to Thale Ban National Park.

My post about my previous border run .... Thale Ban National Park

They have not banned them.

Only will a person have a problem is if they are trying do to more than 1 in/out entry after doing the entire time allowed for a visa exempt entry and then going out and back for another one.

There are some southern border crossings that have made up their own rules though.

That's just it Joe, some border crossings making their own rules, that's also why so many posters are getting confused, and there is nothing us Farangs can do about it.

Why can't this country just have it's rules, and make sure all IOs go by them? Is that so hard? Yes I know TiT.

Thanks, this seem to be the truly most lost border post of Thailand.

Sometime I wander over the borders on Google maps, still I couldn't see it!

Time ago I rented a car for a run to Malaysia. I would have gone there if I knew.. I ended in Dan nok via Hat yai and got a my share of rudeness over there. Oh well.

I always thought there was a small river or creek under the roadway that marked the border. Oh well, you're probably right.

I posted recently on my visa run by train to Malaysia. I had no problems and no documentation/ proof of funds was required.
