webfact
PM urges that TV soap operas added some historic and patriotic contentsBANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha today told his subordinates not to spend too much time watching TV soap operas saying they contain mostly jealousy and quarrels. He said he would like these Thai soap operas to contain the country’s history and patriotism. In his address to soldiers at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters marking its 28th establishment anniversary Friday, Gen Prayuth recalled his time as a cadet at this place, the Chulachomklao Cadet Academy, and was going to retire from this place again soon.He said leaving this place again was like his heart was sinking and he would be saddened if he has to retire from this place (Army). He said besides studying here when he was a cadet, he also was working here for the past six years since he was Army chief-of-staff and later promoted to Army chief.(The present location of the Army Headquarters is the former location of the Chulachomklao Cadet Academy which was later relocated to Khao Cha Ngok in Nakhon Nayok province).Gen Prayuth said all soldiers have worked hard to serve the country, and resolve all national problems. He said he didn’t know what would happen if all these problems were not resolved. But he vowed to work harder and urged all soldiers to set good precedents and won’t give up until all tasks were accomplished. He said he would remain the same person even before or after May 22, and would always be the same wherever he would be.For all the army personnel, he told them not to get tired of his “Returning Happiness to the People” programme because his programme might eventually force them to watch soap opera series late into the night. He urged them not to spend too much time watching these Thai soap operas as most contain jealousy and quarrels. He wished that these series should better add some histories and patriotic events in it.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/pm-urges-that-tv-soap-operas-added-some-historic-and-patriotic-contents/ -- Thai PBS 2014-08-29

So will they include all the lost wars with Burma, the sacking of Ayutthaya, the piracy on the Gulf of Siam when the Vietnamese were robbed of their gold, the pact with Germany and Japan during WW2, how the people of the north sent their daughters to work in brothels when they needed a new fridge, the Saudi Gem affair and so on.., in the Soup operas? If, than maybe I will start to watch the crap.

Well today, they had a crack down on overweight trucks (for the 5000th time since I have known anything about Thailand) and now it is soap operas. I think they are running to the bottom of the list for things to do. i suggest he goes back to A and finds his way to C for corruption pretty rapidly. waynethor
It's true enough that Thai soaps are horrible trashy TV, but the General's message sounds like something that might be said in North Korea. I hope this country isn't headed in that direction.

Popular Post Katipo
Cos Thailand isn't nationalistic enough How about they encourage Thai soaps to feature positive role models. Everyday Thais overcoming everyday problems, with perseverance and ethics. Get rid of the violence against women and love triangles. Obviously you've got to have drama, but showing a little bit of the creativity that those in the Thai advertising industry seem to have in spades, it much better than the repetitive junk they show now.

Keep government schools rubbish, keep the local grog cheap and dangerously strong, keep feeding them TV soap, keep the 8pm "news" coming, keep up the propaganda. Don't let poor people have any rights. Yes, that's Thai-style democracy, folks.

Unless it's a costume drama of course when the trip will be to a palace in Ayutthaya. Pretty girl always marries the hero and the nasty girl is either gang raped by a group of Burmese labourers or her family goes bankrupt.

brd
What an excellent initiative one more times from PM General Prayuth whom saw TV shows are watched daily in each family home instead of showing perpetual so often stupid family dramas plays based on money, greed, unfaithful behavior and business skills shortcuts... showing at the same times luxury items very very few benefits from....reading books has completely disappeared if added video games... For nothing to change everything has to change and PM General Prayuth is the RIGHT Man at the Right times in the Thai modern History new chapter he has opened himself so brilliantly.
