Project Manager - Home Enterprise Network

Featured Replies

First I need to say it's not a job offer, more a call for help as when I read the posts in this section of TV I realize a number of people here have precious experience in network design and management.

Then I want to clarify the project. It's a home network. So why do I say "Enterprise" ? Because the modern home network is comparable in size to the one of a small company. 3 - 4 computers, printer, Wireless access point, NAS, routers .. If you want to add a couple of security camera and a decent HTPC, it is not different from a small business office. Also when you talk about a business, it implies some security aspects that I want to include in my home network too.

Now you are a professional project manager and you want to design a network for a small business, where do you start ?

Start with the size.

Is it in a small area where you can do everything wirelessly?

Or so big that you would need wires (or a combination of the two).

3 story house. My "office" is in the basement, 3 computers there, a printer and a wireless router that is used both as a switch and a Wireless A.P. as the signal from the main modem router is too weak in the basement. First floor nothing (kitchen, dining room ...) Second floor there is the modem router, two other computers + one that is use as a HTPC, one NAS and a TV.

We planned to add more TVs in different rooms that should all be connected to the NAS with XBMC interface. Also planned are security cameras that should be accessible from outside but also from each TV.

Also I would like to have network socket installed in all the main rooms as I don't like wireless connection for a number of reasons.

Options are remote control of the lights and the air cond if it is within our budget.

That's what comes to my mind now. It's also why I ask for "professional help" as I don't want to realize once the work is finished that I forgot a number of things that could have been easily installed when the worker were there but now it's too late :-(

Basement? There are basements in Thailand?

I do hope you are located up on a mountain.

I would also suggest creating a list of all the Internet Devices, type of connectivity, what they access, their relative location (where they 'live' or locations where you will be using them) ...and list of probably/possible future Devices (5-year plan).

Basement : The lowest habitable story of a building, usually below ground level.

In our case it's not ;-)

I gave the list of the current devices in my previous post. For the possible future devices, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I just found this blog that is quite interesting : http://www.smbitjournal.com/?s=doing+it+at+home
