Retirement Couple Visa Questions

Featured Replies

After one of you receives the extension of stay then the other person applies for a extension of stay as a dependent no need for money but will have to show a marriage certificate to confirm relationship. The 90 day report as above only for people in country longer than 90 days if you leave it resets the calendar. On an extension of stay you both will need re-entry permits obtainable at immigration or at the airport.

There is, however, a risk with this alternative that needs to be addressed. Should anything happen to the main residence holder, e.g. a sudden death, the spouse would immediately loose its permit and need to leave the country or face overstay.

Not true as mentioned above by mod. Lite Beer

No need to worry.

If you should die your Wife can keep her extension until it expires if she goes the dependant route.

She would not of course be able to apply for another one when it does expire.

I write as part of a married couple with a retirement visa here. We decided against my husband being the one with the retirement visa and me with the 'follower' visa. Only because I like to be in control of my own destiny and if he ever popped his clogs (which I hope he won't of course) that I would be self sufficient in the same way I am financially in terms of visa. What we did is my husband got his retirement visa first (he did an extra visit over here) and then I after I got here. We have one joint bank account and two individual ones. The retirement visas for myself and my husband are just over six months apart so we just switch the money from one account to the other to ensure that we have the 800K in an individual bank account at all times. A couple of things to be aware which we have encountered. 1. make sure that the 800K is there for all of the required time and that you have a bit extra in there so you can make one transaction. The reason being is that when one goes to renew the annual retirement visa immediately prior to that one has to get letter from bank and update passbook. As the first time we went to renew, there had been no transactions, bank refused to update passbook. We then did a 100 baht withdrawal as advised and put the 100 baht straight back but for immigration purposes we therefore went down to 799,900 baht for a short (hour?) and had to make a payment as we had gone below the 800 baht. I don't think with things as they are at our local immigration that that payment could be made now so make sure you have over 800K baht in order to make the appropriate transaction for a book update. 2. We have made a mistake this year as we booked a long trip to Australia which we did without thinking and the start of it was 32 days ahead of the renewal of my husband's retirement visa. When we checked with immigration (who are quite helpful in Hua Hin) they said retirement visa couldn't be redone 32 days in advance and we would ahve to start again. We changed the flights so that we will go in on day 30 before renewal to do the necessaries. the 90 day reporting isn't an issue - every 90 days we go in, but if we have a trip out then the 90 days starts from then. As long as you get into the habit it's not a problem

We also go to immigration when we come back into the country. There is a requirement to report (in the same way hotels do when you stay there) when entering the Kingdom or going to another province. Everytime we go Immigration says we do not have to do this but as it appears to be necessary we do it anyway

We have found the whole process of retirement visa etc quite straight forward. If you have the funds, correct paperwork etc it's not a big deal - people complain about it but if people were trying to stay legally in our home country (UK) or indeed stay in australia year after year it would be much more involved :)
