Best place to change baht to U.S. dollars when moving back to the States?

Hi folks - I am moving back to the U.S. in October after a year in Thailand, and will have a little over $3,000.00 in baht in cash when I close out my local bank account. I don't currently have an active U.S. bank account, but of course will open one as soon as I arrive back in the States. Am I better off changing baht to dollars here before I fly out - or at a bank or Thomas Cook in the States? Thanks for your help - it's been a great year here - but time to get back to "reality"! I am on Social Security and live on a fairly limited income, so don't want to lose any more of it than I have to when changing money......

Thai Currency

If you are taking out cash in Thai Baht currency from Thailand, remember to file the report on departure for an amount of THB 50,000 or more. However those traveling to Lao PDR., Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam are allowed to take out Thai currency not exceeding THB 500,000.

I found Vasu Exchange near Nana Station in Bangkok to be excellent.. I had calculated the rates from the Internet last year and when I exchanged from THB to CAD I was only like 3$ off on 1300$

they have a website with the exchange rates and a calculator

Change your baht to USD in Thailand. Your best exchange rate for notes will be at an exchange like Super Rich not at your bank.

http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net and never exchange at an airport as they have the worst rates going.

Great choices both of the above. Ones I've used personally with never a problem.

The Vasu Exchange is easily accessed from NANA BTS Station, use the exits which lead down to the Odd numbered Sois.

Here is their advertised exchange rates ... http://www.vasuexchange.com/ and, above, you have the ones for Super Rich.

I would also do what has been suggested above ... exchange into USD here in Thailand, keeping a little for the transport and eats at the Airport.
