90 day holiday for Australians - what are my options

Featured Replies

Hi all

I really appreciate your help here

We are an Australian family with a 6yo son who are returning to the UK after 20 years in Australia. We are all dual Australian and UK/EU citizens and looking to stop off in Thailand for 90-120 days on our way home. We do not have an onward ticket on arrival in Thailand as we are flexible as to when we leave.

I have heard about the Thai gov cracking down on visa runs, we will be based in Koh Tao so visa runs would be either to Malaysia or Burma.

My question is, should we just arrive on a 30 day visa on arrival and then do the visa runs or apply before for a 60 day visa? Can you do a visa run and get a 30 day visa on arrival after the 60 day visa has expired?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should get tourist visas. Each entry gives you 60 days that can be extended for 30 days at immigration.

You could get a 2 entry that would give you more time if needed.

Hi, do you mean the tourist visa from an embassy before we leave or the visa on arrival?

Tourist visa from Thai Embassy or Consulate.

You don't get visa on arrival, it's called visa exempt stamp.

You can be denied boarding of you don't have a visa or ticket out of Thailand within 30 days.

OK, so if we get the visa from the Thai embassy, and then do a visa run, can we get a new 30 day visa on arrival?

As said you will not get a visa on arrival. You would get a 30 day visa exempt entry. If using the Oz passport you will only get 15 days at a border crossing. UK one will get you 30 days.

If you get a tourist visa and you only stay 90 days you would not need a exempt entry.

If you did decide to stay longer than 90 days you could then get a visa exempt entry.

Hi, i really appreciate your help and advice here.

According to this site http://www.thaiconsulatesydney.org/country/u#country/u/united-kingdom , the 15 day visa waiver for overland entry applies to both Australian and UK passports. It would be great if we could get a 30 day visa waiver via a land border.

There is a rule that went into effect last November that allows those from the G7 countries (the UK is one) to get 30 days at border crossings.

thats great news, thank you

Get a visa and enter on your UK passport.

If going to make a border run on your Australian passport you will only get 15 days, you can not change passports at land borders.

Sounds like a great plan. Thanks
