Scientific study shows consuming artificial sweeteners (such as "diet" sodas) tends to backfire

This isn't surprising or a new concept to many of us ... but here is more evidence about it.

Many people understandably think they are doing the good and healthy thing to consume artificially sweetened products rather than actual sugar products.

But turns out ... maybe not. facepalm.gif

Results revealed that consuming NCS-sweetened beverages influences psychological processes in ways that – over time – may increase calorie intake.

This article presenting this information for non-scientists:

http://www.psmag.com/navigation/health-and-behavior/put-artificially-sweetened-soda-pop-coke-weight-gain-diet-health-90165/

The results were striking: Those who drank the artificially sweetened drink were 2.93 times more likely to take the candy than those who had consumed either the sugary soda or the mineral water.

Not surprising. But I think it is still better for people who drink lots of coke and eat ice cream to use artificial sweetener.

Of course it would be better to eat healthy. But if not willing to eat healthy it is the better of 2 bad bad choices.

Interesting.. because here now in the Netherlands i see a lot of this stuff. I have even drank a bit of it but was always weary of it anyway.

beside getting fat, it can't be good to eat some chemicals....

I am not sure about this stuff as of yet. But there are many artificial sugar stuff and the jury is still out on them. However for the short time that I am here I wont worry too much.

yes but there is surely no benefit in eating them....well beside the the taste.

Interesting info...

I cut out Coke and sugary drinks, and started drinking Fizzy Sparkling Water with ice and Lemon, thinking it was better for me...

But I have since found out it's not .... ??

Every so often I splash out and go for a Southern Comfort and Coke, Life is short...

Wow.

The plot thickens.

Artificial sweeteners might be triggering higher blood sugar levels in some people and contributing to the problems they were designed to combat, such as diabetes and obesity, according to new findings published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Although the precise reasons behind the blood sugar changes remain uncertain, researchers suspect that artificial sweeteners could be disrupting the microbiome, a vast and enigmatic ecosystem of bacteria in our guts.

I did not think this was a "recent" discovery. The old Atkins dies (memba that?!?) also said not to take artificial sweetners because of its effect on blood sugar.

I wonder what is worse sugar .. or the artifical ones.. and there is a broad range of artificial ones not just one. I saw more ads on the TV about a drink sweetened with stevia (Dutch TV that is now back home in Thailand) In Holland it was easy to get some of those zero calorie drinks that tasted good. Here I just make sure I got a pot of green tea ready. Think it was because i was a guest in my parents home and out of my normal comfort zone. But the sparkling ice tea from lipton zero calories tasted good.

of course the artificial sugar is better than the real one.

But no sugar (or less) is even better.

A new documentary called Fed Up looks into the topic of artificial sweeteners, and some of the information might be interesting to you. The documentary focuses mainly on the rapidly growing world-wide epidemic of child obesity but has information that may be helpful or interesting to anyone who struggles with their weight. I downloaded it using bit torrents, but it might available streamed.

what's wrong with artificial sweetener? - Aspartamine is in it.

Some use Saccharin, but I'd say that's just another propietary name for the same thing that's been around since the 'TAB' days.

Yes, you're right.

Fed Up did deal with this issue of artificial sugar promoting obesity as well as real sugar.

Of course probably 99 percent of people have no clue.

The MARKETING is so strong.

Fed Up is really VERY VERY GOOD and it should be seen by the masses anywhere in the world hit by the global obesity epidemic. Including Thailand.

It covers much of the same info as the BBC show -- THE MEN WHO MADE US FAT.

The myths that most people still believe (such as all calories are equal in how the body processes them -- that has been proven to be TOTALLY FALSE) and promoted and exploited by big corporate food companies are torn apart.

I read thru the muslis a few days ago. In my way of thinking that is fraud what they do.

A musli promoted as for getting slim and low fat, with a huge amount of sugar in it.

A musli promoted as without sugar which got plenty of sugar inside as "apple juice concentrate" or "grape juice concentrate" or other ways (that are tasteless concentrates which contains almost only sugar) to add sugar without declaring it.

Written in a 2 mm font.

Usually I am the last one who calls for new laws, but this is clearly cheating the silly and the people who forgot their glasses at home....

Just saw some documentary on obesity. Some lady said i cant help it and dug into so much bad foods i wondered if she really was that stupid or just did not want to change.

But its was scary 60% of adults obese over there never thought it was that bad. Young kids already diabetic when i looked around in Holland it was thankfully not bad compared to over there but they really do have a food culture over there.

For many people eating is the only joy they have. And more so if they are more fat. Surely it is hard to give up that.

I found stop smoking way easier than keeping slim and many people have problems with it.

Which documentary? Do you mean FED UP? Highly recommend FED UP.

It was the weight of the nation, fed up bored me from the beginning with blaming modification foods and big agriculture. I stopped it quite quickly. Look I understand the need to blame outside sources just like Thais never go after Thais when something bad happens and blame it on foreigners. Its better to look outward as inward easier.

There people where huge, and then having parties full of foods that almost gave me an heart-attack just looking at it. A bit later blaming the government that there were no play yards for the kids and that caused them to be fat. Sure some people get fat easier as others its part genetics I accept that i struggled with it but won. Sure its the environment too if your together with groups of people who all eat bad and celebrate things by baking even more bad food surrounded by bad fast food then yes there is a problem.

But then you need to stop and think for yourself for your kids and start cooking healthy maybe trying to get your kids out of these circles. Why not do it as a group. Sure it will be hard for kids because then at moms they dont get the goodies their friends get.. but they will also not be obese and dying young.

By constantly blaming outside sources and not looking what people can change themselves and waiting for a government to ban fast food and change a way of life (they need to be forced) instead of taking charge themselves the epidemic continues.

I do feel sympathy because when i was taken in Holland to an all you can eat restaurant with great food i let go too. Did bike 50 km the next day to try to balance it. But fact is if I had stayed there longer I would have started declining stuff like that because i monitor my weight and if I did this a lot it would have shot up. Though I admit the environment in the Netherlands is far from toxic like over there. (maybe they only showed bad stuff). But it is almost as if they want the government to step in to ban everything so people will have no own responsibility. I thought the USA was different then that. What keeps them from eating a salad like I do... its not that hard to make with some balsamic vinegar and tuna or steamed or grilled chicken.

Well the genetic of the people is the same. Their financial situation is more or less the same. Their willpower is most probably the same.

Still the population gained a lot weight.

Something must be the reason.

My bet is that it comes from the food. It doesn't make you fat, but it makes it harder to remain slim.

McDonalds always did huge tests on how to make their food so people eat more. That was always a topic at my university as usually you test what tastes better Burger A or Burger B. Testing after which Burger you are more likely to order something more is a complete different approach.

Sure it comes from food where else would it come from. But really some vegetables.. some meat and you got a home cooked meal.

Tell me when you were young did your parents let you drink all the coca cola (or compatible) that you wanted or did you have to drink water and tea too ? Nowadays kids drink cola only.

...

Oh. OK. The same old morality lectures and snarky insinuations. How tiresome and predictable. I have no interest in going over that again with you!

Anyway, people with an open mind who realize there are other factors at work that have caused the global obesity epidemic, worse in some countries than others, should really work through their "boredom" and watch Fed Up if they get the chance. Be clear that although a lot of it is specific to the USA that a lot of the food environment factors (for example hidden sugars everywhere) seen in the USA have indeed been EXPORTED to many other countries, including Thailand.

Of course.....

Well we never had coke at home....orange juice or soda water. But they never tortured me with plain water or tea.....Which might be the reason that I like to drink it now.

They forced a few vegetables into me, but usually I ate pork, pizza, noodles and lots of cake......but all home made.....My mother even made the jam herself and never bought anything with any preservatives, artificial color or aroma in it. Not because she saw them as dangerous, because she saw them as unnecessary.

Coke was actually seen by almost everyone as unhealthy junk. Seems the marketing did a good work over the last decades....
