My 5 year driving licence is due for renewal in October but can I renew it a month earlier as my wifes is due then,would save a double trip to the center

Having been in exactly the same position at the last renewal I suggest you wait until both licences have expired otherwise your validity will be 5 years while your wife's will be 6*.

(*licences are valid until 5 birthdays after renewal).
