Drought-affected Yala in need of artificial rains

BANGKOK, 14 September 2014 (NNT) - The southern border province of Yala will ask the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to conduct artificial rains during this period after it was hit by drought for more than six months.

Nakhon Yala Mayor Phongsak Yingchincharoen said drought affected the province’s tap water production for more than 16,200 people in the Yala municipality district. The municipality now produced tap water by 50% of its capacity since the water level of Pattani river, the main source of water, was very low, said the mayor.

The municipality earlier asked the Bang Lan dam to provide raw water but was refused. The dam said it had only 24% of water and it had to provide water to help Pattani province tackle the problem of salty water.

Yala province said it needed artificial rains during this period before monsoons arrived in November and December.
