FDA steps up measures to prevent fake Chinese vegetarian food

BANGKOK, 21 September 2014 (NNT) - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will collect samples of Chinese vegetarian food during this year's festival to make sure that it does not contain meat. Producers of fake Chinese vegetarian food will face legal actions.

FDA Secretary-General MD Boonchai Somboonsuk said the FDA was concerned over safety of vegetable and fruit consumption during the Chinese vegetarian festival every year. The secretary-general therefore suggested that consumers should carefully select and clean vegetables and fruits before eating them in order to get rid of pesticides.

The FDA would also continuously collect samples of Chinese vegetarian food products sold at various places to test for meat DNA. If the food was found to contain meat, its producer would face six months – 10 years imprisonment and fine of 5,000 – 100,000 baht, MD Boonchai said.

The Chinese vegetarian festival this year will take place two times from 24 September – 2 October and 24 October – 1 November since there are two 9th months in 2014 according to the Chinese calendar.

"FDA steps up measures to prevent fake Chinese vegetarian food..."

Yet they haven't taken any steps to stop 7-11 and other "food" establishments from selling artificial substances they try and pass off as food. If you have the stomach for it, watch the following. I am sure that pink stuff shaped like a sausage isn't made much differently:

Would love to get honest labeling on "Organic" labeled products as well.

"Mislabeling is a violation of the law. It is also unfair to consumers who,

concerned for their health and the health of the planet,

spend extra time and money seeking out truly organic products".

I propose imprisonment for those producers using the term “organic”

on the front of the package that doesn’t meet the requirements for organic.

I am sick and tired of being scammed.

I won't pay extra for something that is supposed to be organic because there is no way I can verify that it is any more organic than the stuff that is not labeled so.

How about all the other days of the year when they are selling vegetarian dishes?

This place never ceases to amaze.

Not sure where you live in Thailand, but if you deal directly with farmers markets and they grow near you, ask to visit their farm. That's what we did in Chiang Mai. Now we buy exclusively from them and have built a nice relationship with everyone there. They even deliver to our home now when we call them. It's nice.

ALWAYS support your local organic farmers!!!!

What do they expect when they buy a vegetarian red pork bun? And can we really call gluten &msg confections "vegetarian"?

"And can we really call gluten &msg confections "vegetarian"?"

Of course, why wouldn't they be called vegetarian?
