Jang Jeang's supporters with the B30 million.

PHUKET: -- A mainland Chinese businessman in the software industry has donated B34 million to Wat Jareonsamanakit, a forest temple in Talad Yai.

Jang Jeang, who also goes by the Thai name of Supachai Rujathon, has been a frequent visitor to the wat, and was accompanied by 15 friends who have also supported the wat with donations.

In August Jang Jeang was ordained as a monk at the wat with the name Phra Sookto.

At a ceremony to hand over the money, the friends all wore white with T-shirts inscribed “Jang Jeang: Richest in the Future.”

The donation came in the form of B30 million in cash and six rai of land valued at B4 million. The B30 million is to be put towards the construction of a chedi at the wat.

The abbot of Wat Jareonsamanakit, Phra Ajarn Jamras Jantachoto, said that Mr Jang and his group “have very strong faith” and have been donating constantly to the wat. Because of them, more believers have been coming to the wat from China and Malaysia, he added.

The donation ceremony was attended by Governor Maitri Inthusut.

It would be too easy to be cynical. Let's assume he's Buddhist to the core and only doing this for the betterment of all Buddhism.

How does he own land to donate?

Simply just use the temple's name to buy and he will pay. Thus the donation of land to the temple.

hope he understands that karma cant be bought

Like all mass organized religions its a machine designed to get money of its members. Thai Buddhism is no different its just getting more efficient with its marketing.

Matthew 21:13 springs in mind everytime I read about such things..

No he's not. He's getting ready to check out and making merit to secure a better afterlife/reincarnation. As per Eastern tradition. Stop thinking like a farang.

What a waste of money. I could think of dozens other more important cases in need of charity instead of building more temples and tempting monks into corruption.

Somewhere in south, right now, Benz and Luis Vuitton dealers are rubbing their hands in glee...

Why so many negative comments. It's his money and the guy is loaded. I know of temples in Singapore and HK that receive donations in the millions of Dollars.

At least not every Chinese is poor that comes to Thailand and visits Phuket.

Does the Buddhist faith have substantial investments in all branches of commerce like the Catholic & Anglican faiths.....both churches own some of the best commercial land right throughout the world.plus major share holdings in many companies some of which are a bit suspect....

Matthew 21:13 springs in mind everytime I read about such things..

And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Think of how much good he could have done with US$1mil. How many people could have been fed, houses built, diseases cured.

Mmmm, yes, I don't see any hungry people in this photo.

I think what you mean to say is that merit cannot be bought.

Karma is created by every action. The amount of merit gained by a positive action such as giving depends upon the purity of mind of the giver and the purity of the receiver. If the money is pure and not a by product of corruption or cheating others then it is OK. If the giver hopes to receive something in return, even good karma, that lessens the gift. If the temple or monks are practicing the true dhamma then that is OK. If they are teaching others to follow the true path of the Buddha then the merit will be great.

IMHO the building of new great temples and chedis and Buddha images does little to make people know the true teachingfs of the Buddha but leads them to believe that giving is the only way to make merit.

My teacher LP.Jaran says he stopped building temples, just for dogs to shit in, and started to build people instead.

Matthew 21:13 springs in mind everytime I read about such things..

Yes and Matthew 6:3 as well

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

Which is a statement the Buddha would have whole heatedly agreed with. But surprisingly is the exact opposite of how it is done here in the most Buddhist country on Earth.

Self publicizing charity is loaded with attachment and ego.

How does he own land to donate?

He has a Thai name, therefore most likely he is a naturalize Thai citizen. He probably runs his software business in Thailand.
