My Cheapulus Rift - here's how...

As the title says, here's what i've done to get a poor mans VR up *today* instead of waiting for the real Oculus to come out - it's no replacement for sure, but it's in my hands... maybe a few of you will be interested...

I'm using a cheap phone for this initial test and setup. An i-mobile IQ9, along with Google Cardboard (1000 baht or so, but does include lenses and headstrap).

How i'm doing it.
The most importand part, Google Cardboard;

I'm using the Android/PC game streaming software Trinus Grye
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.loxai.trinus.test&hl=en

This is a client/server based solution, it will run on your Android device as the display, and on your PC you can select what running application to stream to it. Yes it's laggy over router based wifi, but does have a direct wifi mode, along with hard wired USB for latency...i'll post more... If you have a big boys phone like a Samsung Galaxy Sxx then it'll use the internal accelerometer - i've tested some Dive apps on an iphone and this seems to be the best option......

For head tracking, I'm using FaceTrackNoIR - it uses your webcam to replace your freelook with your head position

The game I am running is Arma3 and full everything, 1280x720 windowed - TG needs this for some reason, and i've yet to tinker why....

At the moment I am using TG's fake 3d settings, i'll soon configure TriDef 3D for a full 3D experiance - it can prokeject any game in 3D mode, rendering both viewpoints at the correct aspect and 3D position..

My PC setup is an i5 4670k @ 4.2ghz/16GB/nVidia GTX 660Ti - and the results? I done got me a Rift - almost smile.png

Hope I inspire someone......

(Edit: forgot Cardboard Link)
