My UK offshore bank requests that I have my UK passport certified at the British Embassy here in Bangkok and send the certification to them.

Has anyone done this recently in Bangkok? Their website lists "Proof of address and identity" as one of their notarial services but there's no details about it. Is it a walk-in job or appointment? Same-day service? How much is it?

I don't need any 'proof of address' as the bank has accepted another method of doing that. They just need me to front up with my passport and the UK Embassy and for them to issue a letter saying that I am who I claim to be.

Thanks,

NL

I do not like the sound of this, it could be just the beginning .

Currently, no appointment is necessary, and it can be done at either the embassy in Bangkok or the consulate in Chiang Mai.

There will be a fee.

Sounds good. I can go in the morning and submit the passport and whatever else is needed and hopefully if they aren't busy, I can collect it in the afternoon. They did a same-day proof of income letter last year as they weren't too busy that day. Previous years it's been submit one morning and collect the following afternoon.

I will call them in the morning to make sure I have all my ducks in a row.

Certainly when I got my income letter recently, I followed advice from a pal who used to work there and went mid week, seems to be less busy, got there 30 mins before they close, seems most people get there early, queue up outside and then wait inside, I was seen fairly quickly, meandered round to Central for a spot of lunch and then went back when they opened for collection and picked it up.

The bank in question has been in the process of transferring their personal offshore account business to a bank they acquired a few years earlier. The excuse I am given is 'due dilligence' on existing account holders. However, I am aware that it's just another excuse to gather personal information that is demanded by both the UK and European tax authorities. It's the same, specific and very precise address where you live information that the UK passport office insists on when doing an overseas passport renewal. Some people have problems doing this apparently.

You should ask your bank to credit your account for the cost of providing all they "need".

I've just had a couple of financial institutions ask for the same stuff. It was only about 3 years ago I provided the same info when changing my address to Thailand!!
