Sorry for being a pessimist, but some feeling in my little toe tell me that they are going to blow this out of proportions and the village headman sons will sentenced to a life in prison.

I must be missing something, and I hope I am.

But I just scanned various Thai and British news media, and it does not seem like anybody has yet been arrested for the murders.

In fact, the headlines of some Thai media seem to have been ratcheted down several times since mid-afternoon.

Now they simply say that two well-connected Kho Tao men came in for questioning and DNA tests, and both were released.

No arrests were made. They were simply questioned and let go.

There have been reports of police saying that they think they have enough evidence to make an arrest "soon" or "by the end of the week", but what does that mean?

I hope like everybody they catch the vermin who did this and they get what they deserve. And I believe like many it was a well-connected Kho Tao heavy who is responsible. Maybe the police are just methodically collecting enough evidence. But if they have enough to arrest somebody, then do it, and continue to solidify the case afterwards. The investigation doesn't end with an arrest.

Nothing is done until it is done---especially in Thailand. And until someone is arrested, charged, and convicted, nothing is over.

So what am I missing that everyone contributing to 26 pages of posts are not?

I noticed this too it seems that the headlines have been softened as the day has progressed. In the print edition the front page of bangkok post has only the eyes of suspects from Sean mcannas photo blurred and then later the online edition was made blurrier.

At first it was "arrests will be made", then "one arrested one at large", then "no one arrested one detained", then "one questioned and one released while another ran to Bangkok"...and so on

I woulnt celebrate too soon folks. public pressure created this result. until they have the accused in handcuffs recreating the crime in a thai style full confession im not holding my breath.

Relax everyone. They don't make arrests until all the DNA, etc are examined. In the meantime, the suspects are being held by the police. So many of you are really uneducated people on this board. The police are doing well. They want the case to be solid. In fact, they probably want confessions from the guys who did this. The confessions are normally easy to get in these cases in Thailand. You think torture forget that.

All they need to do is to explain DNA and other forensic evidence. Most people dont even know about DNA and what it can do and certainly many Thais isolated on a little island working at labor type of jobs probably dont scan the internet for the latest and greatest. They probably dont even know many cameras are around them.

Once the guilty realize they have no chance they confess for a promise of a less sentence maybe.

Uneducated? Maybe. Naive ? Certainly not. If you think police officers here donot torture a suspect, especially if it concerns a suspected killer of a tourist, you are the one who needs education.

You donot have any idea of what the Thai police is capable of and get away with sometimes.

What do I think about what has happened on Ko Tao? Disgusting, how another human being can do this to another human being is beyond me. Death penalty is too leanient. I think unfortunately you are wrong about that. Why or how would UK police have any DNA? This is not their case! Like the FBI they were not in the end consulted or allowed involvement. The bodies of these poor kids were released to their families for burial not sent for further autopsy in UK. Furthermore the recovery of DNA was compromised by the atrocious mishandling of all evidence and that 'includes' the bodies and the quality of evidential DNA. It was reported officially after the Bangkok autopsies that they had been incorrectly stored and preserved so the DNA samples were degraded and resultantly poor.

Who takes the DNA? Yep the police they could just switch a samples with some fishermen. I would want samples taken by UK police and analysed by a UK forensic lab.

The main suspect was very well known on the island and,

1. next to the bodies in the middle of the crime scene chatting to the police.

2. he's been identified as the mystery man on the CCTV footage.

3. threatened the Scottish guy whilst in the company of a plain clothes policeman.

4. Refused to give a DNA sample.

And it's taken 7 days to bring him in!!

Well, even though these terrible crimes shook the world, I personally will travel back to Ko Tao because I fell in love with this Paradise island. Will I be afraid for my safety? Probably to interested in what ocean life I see. I am being honest. I have followed what has happened from the beggining,, but that island is still my paradise.

I've not been drinking and I don't have any expectations of the British Embassy - any I did have were proven groundless a long time ago. One day maybe you will find yourself in a position where your opinion changes. Maybe I should change the word happy to indifferent - it changes nothing.

No, it has no bearing on the case directly.. but he is maybe not going to be seen as a credible witness either with a conviction for whatever it is for..
