Train derailment likely due to theft not insurgence: district chief

BANGKOK: -- The train derailment in Songkhla's Chana district last week may not have been the work of insurgents as earlier speculated, Chana's district chief Thaweewut Sangsiri said,

Songkhla authorities have concluded that the removal of the rail anchor spikes, which caused the derailment of a train operating between Nakhon Si Thammarat province and Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district was the work of junk dealers.

The dealers took the anchor spikes to sell at junk shops, he said. The derailment injured 11 people. The spikes themselves had earlier been removed but officials identified the theft before anything happened.

Meanwhile Pol Colonel Surachet Hakparn, deputy Songkhla police commander, said police have asked junk shops in the areas to alert them about those who sold the spikes to them.

And who says 'big brother cameras everywhere, watching' is not a bad idea?

It's virtually impossible to get onto a train track in the UK - Police there in minutes - as cameras watch and track lines and report movements on lines. (generally during the day though!)

So if nothing happened did the train derail or not?

Our job in Malaysia finish around 3k inside of Thailand from the Pedang Basar border, the Track is in a terrible condition and is not frequently "Patroled " inspected

The District Chief should take the blame for this derailment! The District should be responsible for all medical related to the recent derailment.

He was aware of a previous attempt to remove spikes (in the same area?) by junk salvagers. What security measures did he take to make sure there was no repeat of removal? What measures did he take to identify the thieves? He's lucky the rails themselves weren't removed, but not for trying to prevent it.

So since they discovered the theft first then the derailment that happened didn't happen is that correct? I'm so confused.
